stehaggan
Well the last few weeks of miserable weather prompted me to build my greenhouse (which has been in bits for 8 months under lots of mud :-/) But now its up - YAY and looking good - so i have got my staging, pots etc at the ready but I was wondering if anyone has any good book recommendations or website links about greenhouse growing? I now have this huge greenhouse ready to get to work but not entirely sure if i could have anything growing in it at the minute lol Help would be appreciated thanks x
Space Chick
Our allotment bible is this book, loads of great tips for greenhouse and the general allotment, and some good recipes too We have already planted our early tomatoes in the propagator Our greenhouse plans this year are to keep our fig tree in as it's still immature and not ready to go out yet. We will also be growing tomatoes, peppers, chillis and aubergines in the greenhouse. We will probably do some cut and come again salads early on until we can move them outside. It's an exciting time of year allotment wise.... Phil is a very happy camper with his planning Good luck Ste xx
Gertie
Great news about your greenhouse. I'm going to plant tomato plants in mine. In not an expert at all, but the last 2 years I've grown gardeners delight & other varieties in grow bags. They've done really well & I've had pounds of lovely tasty cherry toms. I'm going to sow in the next week or 2 as the greenhouse is unheated. I might put them inside on the windowsill first, though I've read some people put them in the airing cupboard, but I don't know about that. I will probably try some chilli and peppers as well. I'll probably sow those next week as well. Then salad, rocket and herbs in March, just a little bit every 2 weeks or so. And I haven't decided what else yet! stehaggan
I was in there yesterday lol - still loving it - it is massive- i am itching to get going in there haha! I did plant a few broadbeans in there as the pack said i could sow outside I have also the same idea about tomatoes chillis and peppers - I am going to take some home with me for the windowsill and then take them back when its warmer as mine is unheated too! Any ideas of when the best time to do the same with cucumbers is?
chickenanne2
Timing for cucumbers much the same as tomatoes, I think. Neitehr like the cold! I've a new greenhouse too, and am v excited about it! I've a fig tree (a baby one!) and will do tomatoes (Shirley, Gardeners Delight and Suntorange), cucumber (have been warned one plant is more than enough!) aubergines (which produce about 3-4 per plant in average year) chillis (as can dry them and preserve in oil, have ordered 5 plants each a different variety), and peppers. Will also do some pretty things, and lots of marigolds in an attempt to keep whitefly away. Phew!
Peaches
Space Chick I have just taken your recommendation and ordered the book. We put up my MIL's old greenhouse last summer, so this will be the first year we've had a greenhouse from the start of the season.... I'm getting excited! sjp
I sow cuecumbers and squashes late April early May as the tend to be quick germinators and I prefere them no to be to big when I plant them on in early June tomatoes I used to sow late until I went to a talk last year when we were told that tomatoes fruit lower down the plant if they are a little bit pot bound so I trying that again this year so they will get sow at the end of the month onion seed need to be sown about now to get any size in them brassicas can start to be sown now as can some flowers that need a long time to get going sweet peas can go in to timings for the midlands north
Cinnamon
I tend to germinate my seeds & grow them until they are quite big on my windowsills, where I can keep a good eye on them & where I know they will work. My Greenhouse is then used for tomatoes (Roma: A large Italina Plum, Sungold: A cherry with gold skin, which is brilliant, & either Moneymaker or Ailsa Craig) I stick to tried & tested seeds now & they do really well. For the last couple of years I have also grown Cucumbers at the very end of the Greenhouse...I know they are not supposed to be grown too near to tomatoes as they like it dry & Q's like it humid,so I put a clear plastic sheet up to creat humidity for them & some trellis for them to scramble up - they did brilliantly I also pot grow salads, but am not bothering with Peppers this year as they never do very well for me

chickencam
I am really excited about this year, it is the first year for ages that I have grown tomatoes, chillis and augergines from seed early enough, they may still get clobbered by the frost, but I will have to pot them on and put them out in the greenhouse soon, they are currently on my window ledges after being germinated in a propagator in my summer house. AJuff
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Delias-Kitchen-Garden-Beginners-Vegetables/dp/0563521139/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1332961701&sr=1-1 I found this book really good when I started out with a greenhouse two years ago. It's set out month by month so very easy to use.
craftyhunnypie
I got a fab book for £4.99 from The Works. It's Allotment gardening - but is very easy to follow & has a calender at the back telling you when to do what. It is brilliant! Good luck.
