Unsecure chicken perches

I was out cleaning the run this morning when my 'bottom of the garden' neighbour called to me. We haven't met before and she wanted to say hello and how she loved hearing the chicken noises! It was such a relief to hear this as they are very loud when they do the egg song and I was worried that they were disturbing everyone but she said everyone loves them as it is like being in the country.

 

I thought that was lovely of her and it really made my day.

 

How does everyone else answer when you're asked how many you have? Today my answer was "6, at the moment". That's got to be standard hasn't it?

That's exactly what my neighbour says when I apologise for amy girls' squawking .

 

I don't have room for more than 6 so I just say '6' .

That's really nice, we have a fairly low fence between our next door neighbours and they like seeing the girls too. I had to laugh on Monday though as we spent the afternoon on Sunday sectioning off with trellis part of the grass and reseeding. When I came back from my dog walk on monday there was a beautiful male pheasant in the enclosed area being watched by my neighbour. They thought it was my latest addition! We could just imagine them saying what has she got now!

Isn't it nice when neighbours like the noise? All my neighbours got hens first, so no-one noticed mine - and the bantams up the road made so much noise, their owner had no idea we even had hens and it took a year for her to find out.

 

Our new neighbours were a bit puzzled by the egg song that Leia sings, having never lived near hens before, but said it made perfect sense once I explained what the five minute fuss was.

I've only got two girls. I'm just in the process of moving and whilst my neighbours here are happy with them and have never complained; one puts treats over the back fence and another chicken sits when we are away in exchange for eggs (I know I'm really lucky) I've been really concerned about new neighbours. I feel a bit more positive now as maybe the new neighbours will like them. Fingers crossed.

I do feel lucky. When I first got the girls one of them turned out to be a boy. I was really panicing about it but my immediate neighbours loved it when he crowed and wanted me to keep him! They actually helped me re-home him to their friends farm because they didn't like the thought of what the breeder would do to him anymore than I did.

Luckily our girls were a bit hit with the neighbours (and free eggs every so often keep them sweet!). Both our neighbours say they like listening to our girls and watching them from their upstairs windows and they have brought their kids/grandkids round to meet them after asking if they could and the kids loved the girls
