Hello everyone, not been on the forum for a while so I hope you all don't mind me popping in for some advice? My 9 lovely ladies have a cube a large covered run and an even larger free ranging run area. My issue is as they have trampled down the soil in the run and kicked the pebbles around in the covered run, the chicken poop is getting a bit niffy in this warmer weather. I am intending to dig over the run (which I do on a regular basis) but wondered if there is any sort of chicken safe "disinfectant" type thing I can put onto the churned up soil to make it more pleasant for them and to stop any potential neighbour problems? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Dee

Stalosan and Biodri are both powder disinfectants than can be sprinkled onto the ground to sanitise. They will also (I believe) kill off worm eggs too, so good for keeping your chooks healthy as well as reducing the pong a bit. I know how you feel - my girls have an outdoor FR pen too, and it's starting to get a bit whiffy. It needs a good dig over and a generous shake of disinfectant, don't think the neighbours would appreciate farmyard smells!

It would be interesting to know if Bio Dri & Stalosan do kill worm eggs. Hens kept in fixed runs are at a much higher risk of getting coccidia & if stalosan or biodri killed off the eggs the incidence of coccidia would decrease. Might be worth investigating this more fully. Alli x

Got this blurb on Stalosan from the flytesofancy website:

"Broad spectrum, destroys worm eggs, coccidial oocysts, fly eggs and larvae. Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral. Highly absorbent and will help to reduce the ammonia smell created by the chicken's droppings."

Biodri doesn't mention worms but there's bio-OO-cyst:

"Bi-OO-Cyst is the first disinfectant designed to be a powerful, DEFRA approved virucide, whilst also being effective against endoparasites, especially coccidial oocysts which are microscopic parasites that infect the gut and result in Coccidiosis disease, this of course is fatal to poultry if not treated immediately."
