the-marks
Hi all I noticed today that one of my girls had 3 or 4 'discoloured' scales on her legs. When I looked closer at these and touched them, they started to bleed very slightly. I've read around the forum today regarding scaly leg mites (my initial impression) and the scales don't necessarily looked raised at all. Could this still be scaly leg mite? I've smothered her legs in sudocream and will get some scaly leg spray tomorrow. In herself, she seems well - laying and as vocal as ever! Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks
Poached Egg
Hi, It could be the early stage of scaly leg mite and it sounds like you are doing the right thing. I think you should also treat your other girls to avoid any spread, hope you can sort it
The Dogmother
Could be that she's just knocked or caught the leg on something. It's an unusual start to scaly leg mites TBH but there's no harm in spraying her legs and sticking some Sudocrem on just in case.
gongladosh
If I remeber rightly, you could also use Vaseline.
The Dogmother
That's right, Vaseline has a mechanical action and will smother the mites. Sudocrem contains benzyl benzoate which is a pesticide (bizarre as it's a nappy rash cream) so it helps to kill off the mites and the disinfecting properties of the cream help to prevent any infections under the scales. Legs and feet are hard to keep clean in poultry. I use it for all sorts of stuff wonderful product.
sparkysmum
Two of my ladies had early stages of scaly leg mite this year. Used Barrier Scaly leg Ointment from I think Flyte so Fancy. Wonderful stuff. Completely organic & smells devine . Sorted Alli x
The Dogmother
Just remember not to pick the damaged scales off - they will moult with time but will never look pristine again.
the-marks
Thanks for your responses everyone. Elsie, much to her disapproval, had sudocream slapped on her legs initially and has now, along with the other girls, been sprayed with scaly leg mite spray. Fingers crossed! The Dogmother
Good for you. If she will let you, apply the Sudocrem against the growth of the scales so some will get underneath them. You've probably done that anyway though.
Blooms
My chicken has scaly leg so I've used scaly legs spray 2x week for 2 weeks and I've noticed a big difference. I also have been smothering with Vaseline once a week. I noticed that now it's clearing up the very bottom layer is peeling the skin off which is bleeding. Any comments on this subject?
