I stayed with a friend recently in Clapham, London who lives in a mews. I thought I heard him return so I went to greet him, turned on the kitchen light and was greeted by a rather large beautiful fox staring at me through the door. He was clearly living very well because he was in great condition. Not at all fussed by seeing me and just stood there. Cat freaked out and ran away I don't see any where I live, which is semi-rural and have only really ever seen them in London.

My Aunt ......many years ago when i was small, rescued a fox cub and raised it. It was an integral part of the family, and never chased the chickens in the yard.

They were a farming family....... My Uncle Harry thought she was mad and said it would be off when it was old enough, but my Aunt wanted to give it a chance............so many a time little foxy was found asleep with the children tucked up warm beside them.

He was a faithful little friend for two years .He came to a sad end when they were having new drainage ditches dug and he ran with the children along the edge of the ditch, sadly a work man spotted him and not knowing he was a family pet..............no more foxy.

Oh poor wee thing. I have a horrid fealing that the RSPCA would have put it down as you are not allowed to let foxes (counted as vermin) loose again, I think

I do hope that is so but when I took a wee fox cub to our vets here (offering to pay), to my grief they put it down giving the reason that it is classed as vermin and so could not be let back out into the wild

They are, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

I would be interested to know where it is in this act Fred as it was my understanding that there is no legal definition of vermin in the UK and that the issue re releasing animals referred to non indigenous species. Regardless, the RSPCA release foxes all the time.

You are right, there is no legal definition of vermin, but since they are not a protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 you can kill them or release them. There is also no closed season for killing foxes, unlike with some other animals.

You don't have much confidence then in modern bio washing powders and nice hot washing machines

I do usually, but I'd have to do more than that to eradicate the thought of it's mange and fleas. I'd burn the mattress too.
