SeramaSilly
My sister has always coloured my hair with professional dyes as she is a hairdresser but at the moment I've got to do it myself because she has just had a baby today - a boy!!! I've just tried L'oreal Excellence but it hasn't covered my roots at all!! I've been looking on the Boots website and John Frieda's range which is £10 hasn't got a good write up about covering greys either!! Can any of you omleteers recommend a good permanent hair dye that will cover a lot of grey??? Sophie x
AndreaT
Hi, Congratulations on becoming an Auntie I have quite a lot of grey/white hairs and have used most of the different permanent colours on the market! I found that all of them cover the greys well for a week or so but then they are back again. I've been dying it dark for quite a few years but have recently gone lighter as I find the greys don't show as much (they look like highlights ). I'm surprised the L'oreal didn't cover your roots, did you leave it on for the longest time allowed? I've used the John Frieda range, Garnier and Nice and Easy recently and I've found them all good. I guess it depends on how much grey you have. Some ranges do state that they're not suitable for over a certain percentage of greys so make sure to have a good read of the packaging before you buy. Sorry, I've not been much help have I?
SarahJo
When loreal stopped the 10 minute one (Excel 10?) - I tried the sublime mousse - RUBBISH in my opinion. Used Clairol Perfect 10 - another 10 minute appication and its great. They supply a whole tube of conditioner which lasts weeks also. I got a deal in T@*$o 2 for £10. It has lasted a good 3-4 weeks - where others have faded after
ClaireG
When i used to dye my hair myself, i always found the Schwarzkopf dyes to be very good for grey coverage.
LisaP
I was actually going to recommend the John Frieda ones (but I see that you say the reviews aren't too good) because that's what I use and it has always covered my grey very well and lasts a good length of time, it's the mousse one as I find it easier to use now that I have to do it myself since DD went to Uni Lisa P
patsylabrador
I've used the henna from Lush for years now. It covers grey fantastically and conditions my hair. It always feels great after using the henna. It tends to fade rather than show harsh roots. The nice girls at lush showed me how to play about and blend the different hennas and I quite like the colour at the moment. I only use one small square (or equal amount) at a time which is enough to cover it well for about a month. The good thing is that if I don't like a colour I don't have to live with it for long and I like to treat my hair frequently.
Cinnamon
I was going to suggest Lush henna too. My youngest daughter uses it to cover her bleached out hair,& its looking really nice now It is time consuming though - you need to leave it on for a good few hours & fades after 4-6 weeks or so. Mercedes55
It would also be easy to just find out the brand and colour of the stuff your sister had been using and just get some and mix it up yourself. Most towns have shops that stock professional hair colour, in fact if your sister is a hairdresser she would be able to get it for you or you can buy it online. All you have to do is mix the 60ml of colour in the tube with 60ml of peroxide, which for covering grey is usually 6% and just apply it in the same way your sister does. I do mine all the time and I like the huge choice of colours that you get with the professional colours plus I find it works out cheaper too
SeramaSilly
Thanks everyone for your advice!! I think I will find out from my sister the details of the products she used and buy online as Mercedes 55 recommended - I don't think she'll be in any condition to get it for me at the moment with a newborn and a demanding 3 year old!
