quickcluck
Looking for a tablet to take away in the caravan. We are on a budget so iPad and galaxy tab are out. Have been to PC world and my choices are Blackberry playbook or archos arnova 9.2. Any advice from computer whizzes out there?
Geoid
Does it have to be a tablet, would a small laptop/netbook not suffice? They are usually a lot cheaper and have better battery life.
kissinuk
I would agree, if you can't afford a decent tablet go for a notebook/laptop instead. Although saying that, I haven't tried the Archos and they do sometimes produce good tablets. What about going for an iPad2? You can get those cheaper now as everyone wants the newer model (strangely titled 'iPad' not iPad3).
quickcluck
As much as I would love an iPad still too many pennies. It's only to take camping after all......
DoctorDoLittle
I have an Archos Arnova 10" G2, HMV stores were doing a special deal for £135 when i got it in february. It does everything i need and has the advantage that it has usb ports unlike an ipad. Dave
quickcluck
Thanks everyone... We sooooo nearly got the Archos 9, but found one running android 4.0 in our range with ok reviews so am now waiting with baited breath for it to arrive! I hadn't even thought of looking at HMV! Might go and have a browse anyway!

gongladosh
On a good day you can get an ipad2 on ebay for just over £250. Keep it for a year, then sell it for about £150 a year later and upgrade to a used ipad3. Effectively, you're renting an ipad for around £8.30 a month! Bramble
Hope you don't mind, quickcluck, thought I'd resurrect this thread and ask how you are finding your new tablet? Toying with the idea of getting one myself (a MUST is that I can put the kindle app on it) but the choice is just mind boggling!!!!!!!!! quickcluck
No worries Bramble. Mine is brilliant and has the kindle app on it In face the 16yr old also has the same on now, and loves it, so it must be OK!!
Bramble
Wow, that's fab, thanks!!! Would I be right in thinking I can read any of the books that are on my Kindle on this tablet jobby if I download the kindle app? (That seems WAY too good to be true to me!!??) Also, do you use WI-FI to connect at home, I mean, it doesn't need its own 3G connection like a 'phone would/might use to access the net, does it? Many thanks again (I'll shut up and stop crashing your thread now!!! )
merlina
@ bramble Can I wholeheartedly recommend these people : http://www.novatech.co.uk/ Call them and tell them what they want and they will make recommendations (they really know their stuff, but will never patronise the non-techies) They have excellent service and prices too (I've bought my last 3 or 4 computers from them)
quickcluck
you can read only the books that you've downloaded via amazon to your kindle. As it's a Kindle only app, that's how I understand it anyway - I coud be wrong! We connect at home via wifi, and connect out side via any wifi connection of via the BT Fon as we are BT people.... Does that help? You can ask anything silly, I really dont mind, it's nice that it's been helpful. The 'boy' uses it at his army barracks using a dongle too..... Bramble
Thanks Quickcluck ... I'll try not to pester too much more ... it was the Kindle thing that I was most curious about (makes tablets seem almost too good to be true ... ) but I'm VERY tempted Thanks also for that tip Merlina, I will go and have a look at their site !!! Cooks
I have an IPad and my son has a Blacberry Playbook, one thing I would say is that the playbook is a lot smaller screen wise and the swiping screen actions are totally different, he says the battery life is fine. PapaJuliet
Also, do you use WI-FI to connect at home, I mean, it doesn't need its own 3G connection like a 'phone would/might use to access the net, does it? Most tablets come with a wifi only variant and a wifi + 3G variant. If you buy the WiFi + 3G you will need a data plan to get best use of it (plus it is more expensive initially) although it does mean you can go online anywhere and not have to find a wifi hot spot. Obviously it depends on how you intend using it, but I didn't see the point of getting a 3G one. I either use it at home (and use the home wifi) or I take it travelling... generally overseas where I wouldn't want to use 3G anyway because of roaming charges. My tablet is smaller than a laptop so is easy to carry around and when overseas I just have to find a Starbucks or McDonalds and get online free (well, for the cost of a cup of coffee LOL). Also, we often manage to find a motel with free wifi in the room. If I needed to be online while away in the UK, I could get OH to turn on the hot spot on his phone but in practice I rarely bother. Alternatively I'd use my phone but I prefer browsing and Facebook on the tablet. I hope some of this waffle was useful. Basically you need to decide where and how you intend using it then decide whether you need 3G or whether wifi is good enough. PJ
