l_ouise
Hello There is a 4 acre field at the back of my house with an outbuilding and the man that owns it is a nice farmer type chap and he showed an interest in me keeping chickens and before long he bought about 12 POLs. Soon after his chickens were roaming all over the village, including in my garden, which i don't like. I don't like the mess my own chickens make and i certainly won't tolerate a whole flock of someone else's chickens. Plus i look after my chickens and these ones are a bit mangy looking. Luckily i have a couple of dogs who see them off. I spoke to him about the chickens once and mentioned that they are coming into my garden and about the dogs and he laughed and said that they won't come back after they realise there is a dog about. I suggested that he could clip their feathers but he replied that he wanted them free range Well they keep coming back as soon as the dogs are inside and my chickens aren't keen and i'm scared of them catching someone off them. Today i managed to catch one and i clipped one of it's wings. My husband has told me that i shouldn't have clipped it's wings because it's not my chicken, but i said i didn't want it coming back any time soon... I just don't know what to do about it
Luvachicken
Sorry to hear about the farmers chickens in your garden. The only thing I can suggest is to put up higher fencing so they can't get in, but in a way, why should you ? I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along and suggest something. Good luck. Cinnamon
If I am honest I am going tio say that you should not have clipped the hens wings - I suspect that may be criminal damage I can see your point though & I think you need to have a firmer word with the chap in question & tell him that you do not want his animals on your property, end of. That said,it is lucky that hens are easier to contain than cats!
The Dogmother
I'd be furious too, and I suspect that others in your area won't be too happy if the hens are straying onto their property too; apart from the mess, they will transmit worms, lice and other problems if they aren't well cared for. It's just laziness and negligence, you wouldn't let your dog or horse stray around like that.
