OH faces redundancy

Recommended Posts

OH has just found out that there is to be a 'restructure' within his workplace. His post is being s"Ooops, word censored!"ped and he has been given a job application form to apply for a job that is virtually the same as his but with a different title. They are doing away with more posts than they are replacing them with so there will be redundancies.

I only work part time and doubt there are any extra hours available. Even if there are, full time I don't earn nearly as much as OH.

I know it is all ifs and buts and up in the air but can't help worrying.

Thanks for reading. Just wanted to let this out and don't have anyone I can discuss this with other than OH and he is feeling low enough without having to worry about how I am feeling.

Sorry to hear that :(

I expect you are still in shock, but as that wears off you'll be able to see more clearly. Assuming your OH wants to apply for this new job then the first step will be to do as good an application as he can. Perhaps do a bit of asking around at work to try to understand exactly what they are after and then canvass the internet, friends and family for hints and tips about CV preparation if its a while since he's done one. A friend of mine paid a careers counselling firm for advice - they really helped him decide what he wanted and helped him see exactly where his skills were, and he now has a dream job.

There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Another close friend of mine had to reapply for her own job when her organisation restructured. Before she knew the result, she went through a period of feeling angry, then started to feel completely demotivated, then a bit resigned. However, since she found out she has 'won', she is full of new ideas and new enthusiasms, planning for the future.

I'm sorry to hear that, it always comes as a bit of a shock, doesn't it? Some great advice above from Daphne.

I'd advise him to get his CV out there and start looking in case things go pear-shaped. I've been in rocky situations like that a couple of times, and as a single parent it's not really what you want to hear but you manage and something always comes up; I was offered my current job 10 years ago when I was temping after being made redundant, they offered it to me after 2 days :)

Sorry to hear about your worries. It is so sad that the employment situation is as it is these days. My OH has had a number of jobs and has moved quite a bit from his original career. We are unsure about the long term too :( I have encouraged my children to get as many different work experiences as possible. My ES who has only been out of university for 4 years is very quickly changing career paths but picking up more skills on the way which I hope will help him in the future.

I hope everything works out ok for you

So sorry to hear that :( Having been made redundant last year after lots of scares as the company shrank from 10,000 in the UK to 0 over a number of years I concluded the actually being made redundant was not nearly as bad as the uncertainty up to it :(

If he doesn't have a CV he really must do one, it will take time and lots of reviewing and improving. Encourage him to just do a rough draft first so it isn't too intimidating. Daphne gives good advice about doing the best application he can for the 'new' internal role.

Wishing you both all the best, it will get better really!

I feel refreshed with a new optimism about this next stage of my life. My previous role was interesting and challenging with a great boss and lovely immediate colleagues but in a demoralised deeply frustrating organisation with too much work and too few people. I'm now doing freelance work in the same field for less money, there is always a worry about finding the next piece of work but it has let me broaden my experience and take some time out for family commitments. Friends tell me I look younger now compared to then.

I really sympathise - we have just been through an 'efficiency' and 'realignment' process at work, I survived but in a team of three one of my colleagues has been made redundant, and I found the waiting period extremely stressful. Fingers crossed that his application will succeed, but if it does not then do check if the company is offering 'outplacement' services - our company has done this, and it means that those made redundant can get professional help with CVs, job-hunting etc.

As Patricia says, the uncertainty is the worst bit.

Thank you all for your support and suggestions. Today I have thought about nothing else. The type of job that he is looking for usually requires applicants to fill in lengthy forms not submit CVs but he has a draft CV to help him remember all the things he has done to date. Although there is some variation in the forms, he is very good at writing in a way that shows how he meets the different criteria they want. He meets the criteria of the new post exactly, he has been doing the job for years already

You have my sympathy, you really do. I know what you're going through. My husband was told on 27th April his job was under threat and put onto immediate gardening leave. He was made redundant on 31 May, and is still sorting out all the finer details. He has 33 years service behind him and is able to take his pension, but at 51 has a lot of years left that he could be working. He has been in the same job with the same employer (HSBC) since he was 18, but really thinks that financial services have had it for the time being so wants to look for something else, but its difficult to write a CV for a job when you don't know what you want!

Its the waiting and not knowing thats the worst, but believe me it works itself out. Just keep strong and look after yourself too.

You have my sympathy too, my hubby was made redundant a couple of weeks ago. Its about the 3rd time this has happened. I'm more worried this time than I have at any other time. I don't work (at the moment), luckily he has got a decent pay-off but it won't last for ever. This time he's actually trying to think of things we could do to earn a living together. I think he's totally fed up with this happening. Hopefully something good will come out of this.

I hope things work out for your hubby.

Seagazer - that is what we are trying to do, although I will continue to work.

After 3 years of Hubby being in and out of badly paid jobs we have decided to set up our own business.

It has been a lot harder than I anticipated and I still have very down days when I wonder if it is all worth it, especially as the money starts to run out now and we STILL arn't trading. (We are waiting for the website).

Can't tell you it will all work out in the end, but there is lots of support out there, try your local council, ours has business workshops that go into bookkeeping, marketing, sales, the organise networking events and offer free training courses on all sorts of things. Also have a look on Linked In, we have a strong local business network on there in the Wirral. (no chicken vets - but the business start up is pretty good)

Banks, we went with Barclays who offer lots of services including bookkeeping packages, legal packs, forms and advice, (havent asked them for money yet so don't know how free they are with that)

There is also a lot of data out there that suggests that its a good time to start up a business during a recession.

Good Luck,

Hoping it all turns out well for you and everyone else in this situation . Sending lots of positive vibes for good news.

I was made redundant last year after working for local councils for 25 years and initially found another job very quickly. Although it was supposed to be permanent, it ended after six months as this council also ran out of money and there are no other posts likely in my particular field.

I'm by and large an optimist and seeing this as an opportunity to identify something I'd actually like to do, living off my redundancy pay while I work though what might be available. Having said that, suddenly finding myself out of work did come as something of a shock and I have found the advice and support of friends and family (and this forum) invaluable. Like others in this thread, running my own business is something that appeals to me and an option I'm exploring.

Fingers crossed for a happy outcome for all of us!

Why can't there be money in keeping chickens and watching them all day ... ?

Thank you and good luck to you. I would like to set up something OH and I could do together. I hope you get your own business up and running soon.

OH has a number of forms to complete so guess what our weekend will be spent doing

Despite all the uncertainty of what is happening we are trying to stay quite upbeat. However, it has come as a shock, completely out of the blue. The organisation is still recruiting at a higher level on big salaries and paying bonuses etc to executives whilst getting rid of those doing the work. Really doesn't make sense but I certainly don't see any sign of them all being in this together when they are advertising new jobs on 4 times or more what OH earns and so many jobs at his level and the one below are being made redundant

In the meantime, we have had some great news about MIL. Chemo has been successful and she has been given an all clear

I was made redundant last year, I was given lots of good advice on here and a search would pull up the thread about it called 'Redundancy'

I was lucky enough to find a new job quickly, its not as corporate and I have to run my own car but I am enjoying learning about a new industry and the challenges it brings and also enjoying having more of a home life than I have had in some years - I cant believe how much more relaxed and happy I am

When things were happening I was told by others not to worry and it may be the best thing thats happened to me and I have to say... they were completely right

Really good to hear how well things have worked out for you. Hopefully we will be able to say the same soon. I think as someone else has said, it's the uncertainty until we know one way or the other. We can't really plan until we know the outcome of his application. Until then, we plod on.
