The Dogmother
About 5 years ago I had an accident when someone ran into the back of my car... all sorted, no-one hurt, done and dusted. Now I get about 4-5 calls per day (on my mobile which is a number I'm not in the habit of giving out) from 'accident management specialists' trying to get me to make claims. I have blocked as many of their numbers as I can but many of them are unidentified so the list of callers grows and grows. Anyone else have this? merlina
Yes! Had a very similar accident 2 years ago Am quite disturbed that somehow these companies know about this They don't get a polite response when they call..
Cinnamon
YES! My accident (They hit ME!) was about 8 years ago, maybe more. The calls from these muppets plus the bloomin' P.PI people are driving me to distraction. Edited July 25, 2012 by Guest
The Dogmother
I don't get PPI calls on my mobile (we get those at work) but these started about a year ago and have now reached a volume where they've got to be a hindrance.
soapdragon
I havn't had these calls, thank goodness, but did get lots of calls from people trying to sell me a new kitchen, replacement windows or a conservatory . I then discovered the telephone preference service and registered with them and the calls have all but stopped - I did get one the other day and said, quite sternly, 'you should not be calling me as I am with the telephone preference service' I got an immediate apology and was told that they would remove my number from their data base! Not sure if you can do this with mobiles tho . In a way I miss the calls as I got to the stafe where I used to say 'oh, yes we really need one of those, just hang on a minute'....... then I'd leave the phone on the side just to see how long they WOULD hang on for !!!!!!! (Sounds a bit mean but, boy was I fed up with it!!) Its so rude of people to feel they can invade someone's privacy like this ......but then I do feel a bit sorry for the actual person on the line as they must hate actually doing it but I guess its a job!! OOps, meant to say we are also with the same service but for post.....very little junk mail now too!
Cinnamon
I am registered with them and update regularly, but still get the calls to my home & mobile. I also HATE getting calls from people I do have an association with, like my mortgage lender, asking if I want to look at home insurance too
sjp
if you use TPS remember to re-register every couple of years plus with cold call don't be to friendly with them.I find hanging up on them as soon as them start to tell you who they are from works eventually and after a few calls from the auto dialers you get to know the tell tale pause that's when I hang up on them I'm doing well at the moment not had a single cold call this month last month it was about 3 a week minimum and yes I'm on TPS and re-registered earlyer in the year
snowberry
Top Tip!!! Often in the buggy text messages that you get, it tells you to reply with STOP to, er, stop receiving the calls. Well, Don't do it! That's designed to check to see if you have an active line..& then you're plagued by calls forever! The problem is that the companies change their number about once a day so it's very hard to bring them to book.
Ain't Nobody Here
I used to get silent calls on my mobile once or twice a week . Thankfully, they appear to have stopped. I get quite a few cold calls at home despite being registered with the TPS. I've just tried to re-register on their site and it says my number is already registered . The Dogmother
Home isn't a problem as I have caller ID on the display so we just don't answer any number which we don't recognise. TPS doesn't cover off-shore call centres.
Ain't Nobody Here
At least you can immediately recognise an off-shore call and take appropriate action . I usually hang up but occasionally enjoy playing along with them .
Willow
I think some of the 'accident' calls are speculative. I'm not convinced they always know you have had an accident but there's a reasonable chance you have had sometime in the previous few years. The Dogmother
These callers are quoting the date so I guess they've been sold my details. This really makes me angry.
Willow
These callers are quoting the date so I guess they've been sold my details. This really makes me angry. That is bad. We've only had the calls where they have no info and make a guess at us having had a accident in the last 5 years - I really think I'd have noticed it at the time... Mrs Potts
I get these on my mobile and I haven't had an accident. Do you think someone is trying to prepare me? Mrs Potts
bluekarin
You don't need to re do the TPS form. I heard this a while ago, but when you go to the site it says you are registered already. TPS also doesn't cover calls from overseas (as someone has said) and surveys, which a lot of the companies who call us say they are. I get at least 1 PPI or Government grant for free insulation call a day, and as a bonus Microsoft IT support sometimes throw one in for good measure *sigh* I usually say I don't have a PC. That usually stumps them I do get quite annoyed with them though. We even had one Sunday morning. I said can I stop you there. Do you realise it is Sunday and he said I am sorry madam (grr) but its part of my job to which I said I wasn't interested and hung up. The Dogmother
The thing is, if you have caller ID and don't answer any unknown numbers then they eventually stop calling. Before I had caller ID they used to call a lot at lunchtime when I was at home; because I was answering the calls they persisted in trying at those times. Once I stopped answering, the calls petered out. Now we don't answer any international/number unknown calls, nor any number which isn't on our phone's contact list. If it is someone who wants to get hold of us then they will leave a message. If you are a residential subscriber to TPS then you don't need to re-register, commercial users get a letter every year reminding them to re-register their number/s. Cinnamon
TBH these days my home phone rarely rings & I very rarely answer it if it does.....anyone important has my mobile anyhow,or we have call minder. Janepie33
I am always getting the "You have had an accident" calls and I haven't even had an accident! One day someone called me and started his spiel and I replied "Oh yes. Which accident was that"? He replied " A car accident" Me "I haven't got a car" Him "Well it must have been another accident" Me "What sort of accident"? Him (quite crossly!!) "Well I don't know. You were the one who had the accident!!" It was then that I put the phone down, chuckling away to myself.
scubababe
Must admit I get those calls and as a childminder working from home I have to answer the phone 'just in case'. I get really cross as I have better things to do with my time like look after the kids!!!! grrrrr It's also the mobile phone companies 'offering' me their latest/bestest deals...... Looney
We get lots of calls for a previous owner/renter. I've worked out a very polite approach that always ends in the caller hanging up... Them : Is that Mrs Fenerty? Me: No, it isn't (with smiley voice!) Them: Is Mrs Fenerty there? Me: No, she's not Them: Are you a relative of Mrs Fenerty Me: No, I'm not And so on and so on! I'm always very pleasant and my inner smirk gets bigger with each exchange as the caller gets increasingly frustrated and eventually hangs up
