Eggasperated
It seems to have been a really hard time for my girls this year, right from the beginning of January when their house was demolished by a tree, to April when I lost Jo, and my three new girls had to returned to the breeder with ill-health, then the three replacements became ill and were treated at the vets, then in May Fearne had a prolapse and eventually had to be PTS. Now Alice has been PTS and Blanche is suffering from an unknown ailment. Plus all the problems with the rain this year. I am really dreading the winter and what it might bring. Sorry for the moan, it all seems to be getting on top of me at the moment, just want my girls to be happy and healthy and to be able to stop worrying as it seems to be taking over my life . mimi5
I know I've posted before but I've also had a really difficult intro to chicken keeping!! Not as bad as you though by the sounds of it! But I have learned alot!!! I have some lovely growers that I hatched to add to my original adults (I lost 2 hens, 1 had to be PTS-impacted crop and the other hen died of a mystery illness!!!) I've now got red mite in the little ones wooden coop.....there's always something!!!! But I feel better prepared for this winter than last year (i got my pekins as growers in oct) I think I've accepted there's highs and lows with chicken keeping and this forum has been a great support too!!!!!! So don't beat yourself up so much...... keep calm and keep going!! Watch your girls having a dust bath....then you'll know the're happy.....pure pleasure!!Remember there's always someone who can advise when you need help! So sorry to hear about you not enjoying your chicken keeping at the moment. I really sympathise, I have had issue after issue since I got the chickens about 2 months ago. It always seem like something goes wrong! One of my girls is off to the vet this week Hope you feel better soon and hope the upcoming winter will have more ups than downs for you. Fingers crossed we have less rain and a dryish September x
Mrs Potts
Hello! I have great sympathy for you. It's been raining quite a lot here and going up tonight, there was a real damp autumnal feeling in the air. Lottie (ex barn) has put herself to bed in the run, which is not a good sign as she normally goes to sleep in the coop, first in. Alys (ex barn) still has white, thick down feathers and no proper feathers at all, even after four months of TLC. They do not lay. I had to give Gracie away in June, because she was so unhappy at being unable to free range - she used to walk up and down, up and down like a demented thing up and down the WIR until we let her out. She's much happier in a local flock of nine, where she free ranges safely all day. I do miss her, she was a proper character once tamed, but again her feathers were terrible. These ex barn hens have not flourished, despite everything I have tried. Leia (ex batt) is now 3 3/4, her lovely copper feathers are growing paler, and they all now have a little cough, which wasn't there yesterday so hello, autumn and hello, Baytril. Hens are all different, the most important thing is that you have tried your best, which is the most you can do for any animal. I'll give them some rice and tuna tomorrow and have my fingers crossed for me, and for you.
