It worked! They(teenagers) were downstairs, at 3am... I was upstairs, txting what food was available, where it was, and telling them to keep the noise down!!

I didn't have to get up, saving me getting cold, and saving them the "embrarassment" of a semi dressed parent arriving on the scene!!!

And they cleaned up too

I have sent a text to my grown up children saying would you like a cup of tea.....they had selective hearing....but answered on getting the text

They seem to respond to texting.

That's interesting Sarah, I'm intrigued. I can see that you don't need to use your SMS allowance if you use this, what else makes this better than texting?

It is very,very fast - instant in fact....texts often lag.

It is also a lot of fun - there are great emoticons to use & so forth.

It brings out my inner child

Hmm, sounds interesting... might try it... although I don't think I will be able to get DH to try it and he's the one I text most.

I've just downloaded Whatsapp . Seems to work well although I've only found 3 people who have it that I would text a lot. I've almost used up my allowance this month so this would be great .

 

Have also downloaded Viber but people can't hear me when I call them . Going to test it out when ES comes home tomorrow.

 

I'm going to start a new thread on these 2 apps - I feel Omleteers have a right to know about them .

Do you have wi-fi at home? I *think* both apps work with that (I assume you have a mobile but just can't use it at home?)

i do have a mobile, but dont use it because it has no signal. As a result its not an internet enabled phone. I havent seen the point of upgrading to that when no one can get hold of me on the phone!

Welovemarmite.....which network are you with? We must be reasonably geographically close to you (Chalgrove) and I have no reception in the village on TescoMobile but OH can get a great signal with his phone - not sure which network as its his work one! Infuriating!

we have tried vodafone (can just about get signal to text sitting on the toilet), 3 (just about text signal in one place in our bedroom if you dont move the phone at all), orange and o2 no signal.

I have no mobile network at home but when I got a new phone OH said I needed one that did UMA I think and that uses the internet or the wireless network to get a signal. At least that is how I understand it.

 

I am sure someone who understands these things will know if I have got the basics correct

You are right, UMA stands for Unlicensed Mobile Access, and means you can use IP (internet protocol) to receive and send texts and calls. Which means you can use your WIFI to get mobile signal.

Our company phones use O2 but my boss can't get reception in his house unless he hangs out of an upstairs window, which means that when he works at home I have to ring him on their landline this might be a good idea.

You need to speak to your network provider, and have a phone which has UMA (most of them do, but not all)

Orange call it Signal Boost and T-Mobile call it WiFi Calling, im not sure what the other networks call it.
