chuckmum6
Just looked at the Next Christmas collection, that's done it, I am now focusing on Christmas, ho ho ho!
Olly
For heaven's sake - I've had an email from Waitrose inviting me to 'reserve your turkey today'! I don't even know who's coming for Christmas dinner yet.
The Dogmother
Me too... and have you seen the price of them?! Having said that, I have reserved my 'Christmas cockerel' with a friend.
Olly
I didn't read any further! After last Christmas, I vowed never again to buy a whole turkey. I'm going for a crown roast or a boned one or similar this year. I still have a large bag of turkey in the freezer!
The Dogmother
I'm not surprised! None of us like turkey, so I always get a large, free ranged cockerel. Depending on how many I am expecting, it is between 8 and 10lbs. We have some chicken left but not overly much, and I use the carcass to make soup. Chicken and ham/bacon pie is a favourite here after Christmas.
Space Chick
We don't like turkey, I think we are getting free range duck from a local farm this year
Goosey Lucy
No turkey for us either, goose/duck/beef instead.
The Dogmother
No turkey for us either, goose/duck/beef instead. Is that the new-style 3 bird roast Lucy?
Chickendoodle
I am sticking up for the turkey Love it with a crispy bacon cover and stuffed with chestnut, sausagemeat and bacon. It is never dry and to me is the smell of Christmas. Think I would get lynched if I tried to cook anything else. We always have Roast turkey with stuffing Roast parmesan coated parsnips - yum Roast potatoes Sprouts Carrots Chipolatas in bacon Home made bread sauce - have to make double quantity as it is very popular Have started buying my stocking fillers and will be making the first cake this weekend Now, is it too early to start playing my Christmas cd's
TheGirlsMum
How much are Waitrose asking per Kilo for Turkey, a Mum at school is offering Turkey at £7.00 a kilo and wasn't sure if this is good price or not.
Space Chick
Our quality free range guy charges £10.50 per kilo for turkey or goose and £5.10 for chicken and duck if that helps.
Goosey Lucy
No turkey for us either, goose/duck/beef instead. Is that the new-style 3 bird roast Lucy? Oi!!! Cheeky Mare! That was meant to be an either/or. I shall not be spit roasting a whole cow this year or any other year! However goose and duck do cook amazingly well on the bbq... Cinnamon
We never have Turkey - I do a proper baked Ham instead, cooked in a spiced glaze & studded with cloves. It is so easy as most of the cooking is done the day before,it looks wonderfully festive,it is delicious & the leftovers are amazing We still have all the trimmings I have booked my Waitrose deliver slot this morning too, which is something else to not have to worry about any more. I just imported my entire trolley from last years Christmas shop,& will edit it to what I actually need a couple of weeks before the big day
craftyhunnypie
I'm not sure what we are going to have this year. Last year we had a Turkey crown & a cooked ham. The ham wasn't brilliant. So we have said we will have our Christmas meat from the butcher in Aberystwyth, instead of our nearest town. It's what to drink that I'm wondering about. I no longer drink alcohol ( it makes me very ill, just a teeny amount, after having \gallbladder out)..& will fancy something a bit different at Xmas. Any suggestions? Also if anyone has a recipe for non alcoholic mulled wine, I'd be really grateful. I've got a mocktail list & ginger beer & orange juice together is very nice. bluekarin
I do mulled apple juice the same as mulled wine, but without any alcohol. Tis very tasty
counturchickens
No turkey here either, we have a large fr chicken. Have started a little bit of shopping online. Only doing stocking fillers and home made hampers this year!
Lavenders_Blue
Mulled cranberry juice is lovely too. Must try mulled apple juice, I imagine it's like mulled cider, yummy! I will start thinking about what to do for my veggie Christmas meal soon. There are lots of lovely veggie Christmas recipes around (I looove Delia's parsnip roulade) but for some reason the recipes always seem to make 6-8 portions. I can't imagine many people cook for 6-8 veggies at Christmas, I wish they would make smaller recipes as I find it difficult to scale it down so much. The Dogmother
Could you cook the full quantity and freeze what you're not eating?
Olly
I'd cook the whole thing - in my experience the meat-eaters all want to try the veggie main course as well!
Cinnamon
My daughter just has all the vegetables & trimmings, plus either a couple of Cauldron sausages or a Quorn fillet. I make a special veggie stuffing for her too
Lavenders_Blue
Yes I usually cook enough for 3-4 people (usually halve the recipe) but even then there's leftovers. And I don't really want to cook the whole thing and freeze it - like turkey leftovers, I'd be eating it for evermore! I like Quorn suasages and fillets, but eat a lot on a regular basis anyway, so usually want something a bit more exciting at Christmas. Maybe I am being too fussy! ETA - Hooray, just found this recipe! Now that looks more promising! Edited October 12, 2012 by Guest
