Oh no Tonsillitis again!

Recommended Posts

Little Miss Webmuppet has succumbed to tonsillitis again, she has been to the doctors and has more penicillin. She's rather miffed as she was supposed to be in the lower school swimming gala today. Mr W has taken her a food parcel to school (she goes to boarding school) of noodles, little pots of jelly and little pots of rice pud as she is struggling to eat again.

I am a little concerned because she only had the last lot of tonsillitis in January. Out of curiosity how many bouts of this lurgy qualify for a trip to the hospital ENT dept? She is bound to ask me when I see her (although I had a right battle to get an appointment when she was little and had recurrent earaches).

I think my eldest has tonsillitis also, she used to get loads of earring infections and had three lots of grommets fitted for glue ear now seems to have swapped ear infections for tonsillitis. She's at home with her dad lying on the sofa feeling sorry for herself (I'm away at my parents, visiting father in hospital who fell off a roof on Thursday, subject of a different post). I suspect we will be off to the GP's on Monday for some antibiotics. She has had three bouts of tonsillitis now but only one was really bad the other 2 settled pretty quickly and we have had at least 6 months since the last bout so she can avoid the ENT surgeons for a bit longer which is a relief as we have only been discharged for her ear problems in the last 12 months.

Good luck with your daughter if she is missing significant amount of school then I would push for a referral.

Poor LMWM .

The article that Fred linked to is very interesting, especially the amount of adults commenting, I had my first and most serious bout at 16 but have had it quite a few times as an adult, particularly when run down.

It seems that having them out is not always successful, but if it is affecting her quality of life then might be worth a try. hope she feels better soon.

YD has now come down with high fever and sore throat  ED recovered after 4 days without antibiotics so I guess it was viral tonsillitis not bacterial or it would have dragged on for longer but it seems she has been friendly with the virus and passed it on to her sister.

I'm fed up with the family all being ill, I have had a snuffle but nothing much whilst everyone else has been struck down with one virus or another topped off by my dad falling off a roof last Thursday and needing surgery on a badly broken arm. My parents are 200 miles away so not a quick trip to visit them. I'm struggling to balance home and work, both OH and I have important meetings at work tomorrow but I doubt ED will be well enough for school so I guess I'll be having more time off work and having to deal with the fall out from work added to the stress at home.

Umm fed up.

I feel for you. :(

There seems to be a nasty flu like virus running riot around here. DS's school is badly affected and so are lots of offices in the town including ours. We are only a small firm and it is causing big problems for us, all of us still standing are constantly thinking that we may have a cough and sore throat coming. :( We are going away next week so really hoping that we don't succumb then.

Thanks chickencam, I feel a bit better today. YD has been off school today but OH and I split the day up, I was home in the morning and him in the afternoon so both of us managed to get to the most important work meetings of the day. I've just finished the email fallout from the day so feel calmer about tomorrow. Work-life balance is so difficult to find with a demanding job, young children and ageing parents. Sometimes I feel I made the wrong choices earlier in career/motherhood and just feel stretched to thin......

Work life balance is still tricky when your children are grown up, DD is 37 weeks pregnant and I am one of her birth partners so I have had to request time off work, I work in a school as a TA, so I feel bad as l will not be there for the chidlren and staff but this is one time when family comes first.

I hope everyone is feeling better soon.

LMW is back home from school and still feeling rubbish so off to the doctors surgery this morning.....guess what  yup still has tonsillitis ....in the words of the nurse ' it's a bit yucky back there'. More antibiotics, I've also got her some medicated mouthwash (Oraldene) as suggested by the nurse.

LMW is not a happy bunny, she was supposed to be scuba diving on Saturday but we've had to cancel now. :(

Oh dear. I've just had the ED's throat swab from last Monday back and to my surprise it shows beta haemolytic strep so it was bacterial tonsillitis she had not viral as a suspected. She is a lot better but still has a croaky voice and looks very pale, I've been trying to get hold of the GP all afternoon to see if she should have a course of antibiotics now or as she is better just let her ride it out, but no luck so I'll have to try again in the morning. I guess YD who had a fever and headache for 4 days last week had the same bug as it is highly infectious.

I blame it all on the weather, a bit of sun and our immune systems will perk up and we'll all feel better (i can always hope)

I hope your daughter gets scuba diving soon, tell her it will be a nicer experience when the water temp rises a bit, OH went to Scotland diving in February it was -4 on the land and 6 degrees in the water, I turned down the offer to accompany him and took the kids to a nice hotel in Devon with central heating and an indoor heated swimming pool instead!

I hope she gets over this bout, they always seem to pick things up when they are growing fast and their immune systems can't keep up. Rosie once had it badly when we were abroad and a pharmacist there recommended Salvigol throat spray, which is by far the best we've ever used, you can only get it online in this country.

I had it as a child too, when the fashion was not to take them out, I was fine after that age of about 12, then got it again when Rosie was small and must have bought back some bug from nursery. by that age (about 36) my tonsils were so badly scarred, and it took so many doses of antibiotics to get rid of the infections that they were thinking about taking them out.

Hopefully after rest and medication, she will get better.

She was so tired last night that she nearly fell asleep in her dinner. The nurse wants to see her again a week on Monday for a review and possible tests. Apparently recurrent tonsillitis can be an indicator of Glandular Fever  but the nurse is hoping that its just a stubborn bout of tonsillitis.

I swear by tea tree oil at the first sign of a sore throat. Around six drops in a glass of water. As many times in the day as possible. Swore it stopped my DD's getting tonsillitis once they started doing this. When they weren't old enough to be able to gargle they used to swish it around and see how far they could spit it

Hope she's soon feeling better and it's not glandular fever.

Sorry to say that as a teenager I suffered from re-occurring tonsillitis and was eventually diagnosed with glandular fever. I too suffered from extreme tiredness. I was in my first year of 6th form when the glandular fever struck and missed much of the school year. The school were very accommodating and would let me turn up and go home whenever I felt like it, I can still remember the extreme tiredness that would wash over me. On the bright side, once glandular fever had cleared, I had tonsils removed and have rarely suffered a sore throat since. Cross fingers that it's good news.

Interesting developments here today. I had a slightly panicky phone call from one of our gp's this afternoon, having not got around to ringing the surgery myself this morning, apparently the bug grown from ED's throat swap is the same strain that's been causing a small outbreak of scarlet fever in our area. The health protection agency have been notified and apparently will be in touch with me.

Neither girls have had a rash and both are much better although not 100% yet so it all seems overkill and rather shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. Anyway both girls are now on a weeks course of penicillin, only ED had a throat swab but the rationale is that YD has had the same bug. The pharmacist laughed when I arrived with identical prescriptions for the 2 girls.

I wonder if sprinkling their rooms with stalosan would help?
