Yoga

Does anyone do yoga?It is something I have wanted to do for some time.So with New years resolutions in mind I booked a series of classes starting next Thursday. This evening I goggled yoga to give me an idea of what lies ahead and am now utterly panicked.I am quite unco-ordinated and all that inhale do this exhale do that has me in a spin.I once was at a study day and the ice breaker was deep breathing exercises followed by chat on diaphragmatic breathing,I spent the whole day trying to breath from my diaphragm that I hardly remember the topic being studied. The question is is it easier than it looks?

I have been doing yoga for about a year now and love it. I too am uncoordinated and quite inflexible and will probably never be able to get into the positions some people can. If the class accepted your booking knowing you are a beginner I am sure you will be fine, there are loads of types of yoga some almost impossible and some really easy. Hope you enjoy it too - a big principle of yoga is that it is not a competition and that everyone works at their own level, so don't panic !

Yep, I do. I absolutely love it. I go to a class once a week and fit in at least 2 more sessions at home. The class I go to doesn't go in for meditation in a big way, just a little visualisation thingy at the end. I usually fall asleep.

I find it very beneficial for a slightly iffy back too.

You tutor will talk you through the correct breathing. You will soon get the hang of it. Find a class for beginners if you can, although the class I go to is for allcomers. There was no competitiveness, and everyone is welcome.

I would love to do yoga, are most places happy to take under 18s? Because I was thinking that I could take my YD for moral support, she could do with being a bit more active and often complains of back ache, from too much time hunched cross legged on her bed over her computer. She insists on doing her homework this way as did my ED despite us making a room and a desk available

I do Pilates, for my back, and had the same issues when I started about getting the breathing right never mind the exercises  . I found after a while it became almost second nature although I still have occasions, especially when we are taught new exercises, when I get the breathing confused or worse still forget to breathe altogether  . But it certainly gets easier over time.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it, good luck :D

I do Pilates too. I tried Yoga but didn't get on with it although I suspect that was as much to do with the tutor as anything else. My problem is a permanently damaged knee which surgery can't fix. The Pilates helps me manage it. I hope the Yoga works for you, but if it doesn't, maybe think of Pilates.
