ElvisFan
I went out to my girls this morning and found Dusty lying in the run dead, I am totally shocked by this, she was a perfectly health chicken yesterday running around eating and drinking and scrabbling about, she was young, less than 1 year old so how could this happen? Has it happened to anyone else? I just don't understand what could have happened ?
mollyripkim
I'm so sorry, what a shock for you, it's awful when we lies them. Can only imagine she had a heart attack.
Valkyrie
Same with my beautiful Apache - but I did see the signs last winter with the purple comb, but that passed into a lovely red colour and she was happily running around and laying - which wasn't bad for a 5 year old. But I guess with the heat she just went in the night. Very sad for you - it is a shock even when you expect it. RIP Dusty, may she be still running around above the clouds. Olly
Sorry to hear it, but unfortunately sometimes this just happens with hens. I wouldn't want to give the impression that it's a common occurrence, but it's not rare and it doesn't indicate that there is anything wrong with your flock, or that it's anything that you did/didn't do. She could have had an underlying problem which may not have been obvious because hens are very good at hiding weakness from each other so they don't lose their place in the pecking order. Or she may have just had a sudden heart attack or a fatal stroke, even though she was a young hen - there's no way of knowing. It's relatively unlikely to happen again, and your remaining hens should be fine - it is a horrible shock when it happens, though.
ElvisFan
Thank you all for your kind words, I was just so shocked and didn't really have time to take it in as I was just heading off to work, I keep thinking is not real, at least you have re-assured me that these things can just happen. My poor baby.

Chortle Chook
It happened to me last autumn with a little gold silkie. OH and I had only that morning said how pretty and healthy her feathers looked shining in the sun, then early in the afternoon OH found her dead in her dust bath so I know what you mean. It is a horrid shock. Poor you and poor wee Dusty.
