Chickendoodle
I recently split my thumb nail and the split was too far down to cut so the only solution was to keep it covered with a plaster to stop it catching on everything - or so I thought. Discovered a brilliant solution on the internet. All you need is nail glue and a tea bag. You put a layer of glue on the nail over the split, cut a piece of tea bag to fit over, gently smooth the tea bag over the glue and put another thin layer of glue over the top. Leave to dry and you can then cut off any excess and gently file to smooth it a bit. If you wear nail varnish you could paint over it and it would be pretty much invisible. I don't wear varnish but it just looks like a slightly rough nail. It is amazing - the nail feels as strong as new and the repair will just stay there until the split grows out. It may be I am the last person to discover this but it is such a good tip I had to share it

soapdragon
Hope you have already eaten..... One of my toenails split down below the nailbed about 2 years ago and, whilst I have kept it short and thought it had grown out, it clearly hasn't. When the nail growth gets to a few mils it splits again and I feel that this is how it will always be (its not 'split' when its cut flush with the nail itself!) Have tried glue but not sure what else I can do.......not that its a prob but have to keep making sure that it is cut back as soon as it grows so it doesn't snag and tear further Sorry! Edited to add.......has anyone any suggestions on this or am I stuck with it for life? Edited April 9, 2014 by Guest

The Dogmother
Check that your shoes aren't causing it by being slightly too small on that foot.
Chickendoodle
Could you try using the nail strengthener you paint on to fingernails and maybe paint your toenails so that the split doesn't get a chance to form ? Alternatively see a chiropodist as there may be something he can do to the nail bed to stop it happening
Luvachicken
Soapdragon, have you tried Burt's Bees Cuticle butter ? Both of my big toes nails split across my toes leaving a square chunk missing out of the pink bit. The cuticle butter does seem to help. The Dogmother
Don't laugh... years ago when I had Joggers' Toenail, I used Camrosa (horse) ointment and it really worked; I also use it to heal my eczema.
