jeshen
Any suggestions, please, for plants disliked by chickens?! I've found lavender, rosemary and thyme are ok to put in their 'garden'. Also a large established rose and an acer, which is above their head level. However, they've demolished small new roses and a fern.
Cat tails
I would have suggested ferns too, until about a week ago.... The little fern stood no chance... They really like wild strawberries and there is almost no plant hardier then those. They do pluck at the leaves, but they grow back very quickly. Patricia W
Even if they don't like to eat them, they often dig around the roots and uproot them. After 6 years I have learned that chickens and plants do not mix.
JellyBean2605
So far the chickens have ignored both my Camellias, the fern, the magnolia, the buddleias, the laurel bush, the olive tree, the geraniums, the clematis and the Virginia creeper (although I'd rather they ate that)and a few others I have yet to identify. Both rose bushes however have had to go into protective custody
LizzieLloyd
My suggestion is nothing expensive! Mary has a ravenous appetite for my expensive collection of acers and ferns. Ive taken to putting the acers in places she cant reach as she has done so much damage in the past.
patsylabrador
Do you think it depends on the type of chicken? Mine don't eat any plants except grass and have a real passion for grass seed. Other than that they cause most damage when they are digging. Also, I hardly ever let them out of their run at first because we had a big Fox problem so maybe they didn't develop a taste for plants.
