The Dogmother
I don't get this..... I have a dual energy package with Eon, and their energy use comparison online gadget tells me that we use far more of both electricity and gas than other Eon users in similar houses. Firstly I don't understand how they can know what sort of house I live is as I have never given them that information. Secondly, I fail to see how we use that much more energy than other households... there's only Rosie and I here, neither of us is in during the day, the heating is usually off (and only on low when we are in), we don't tend to run electrical gadgets much and almost never watch TV, nothing is left on standby, all the white goods are energy saving rated, and we run the stove most of the winter to save on gas.... Methinks this gadget of theirs is a load of rubbish! Anyone else had the same results from their energy supplier?
Beantree
British Gas gave us an energy estimate for gas use of £1250 per year, based on the age and size of the house. They made no allowance for solar gain, or for the efficiency of the heating system. It actually came to £465 for the year.
Charlottechicken
I am also on EON's dual energy package and the online usage thingy tells me I am just above average for my type of house (and like DM, don't ever remember telling them what type of house!). We also don't have things on during the day, woodburner on every Friday through to Sunday in the winter. No heating on at all since end of May, not even to test it. They've just put my direct debit up too I have neighbours who open windows in winter rather than turn the heating down not sure who they are comparing me with
The Dogmother
I wouldn't mind, but I submit online meter readings every month, so they know exactly how much energy I don't use if I had the energy (pun intended) then I'd call them up to remonstrate, but it's small stuff and hardly worth it. What I can't understand is why they do this - the fact that they can be so inaccurate annoys me, and makes me want to switch from them, so is hardly good PR. I might get Rosie to facebook them and start up a thread, or whatever it is you do on FB.
sjp
my energy report from Eon last month said I'm using 32% less fuel than similar houses with them you don't need to tell them the type of house you live in as they get that info from the council rates office or the National statistics office. the number of occupants isn't taken into account nor is the efficiency of the appliances etc it's purely on energy use one thing I was told by someone in the industry if your a very low use or very high use customer you will get the meters read by them more often first one to make sure your not bypassing the meters
Saronne
I'm with Eon, too, and often query their calculations. I have phoned them to discuss meter readings, direct debits, etc. and often find that the online calculations do not match up with their actual readings- and my usage. However, I've also found them really helpful and polite and they're pretty good at putting things right and crediting my account quickly if I am in credit. Since I've had my house insulated (cavity wall and extra loft insulation) and got my wood burner 2 years ago, I've watched my heating bills drop by half. My leccy bills are slower to come down, but with LED lights and gradual replacement of appliances to more energy efficient ones - I'm making some pleasing progress. The Dogmother
That's good news Saronne... all that wombled wood is worth it! I have it in mind to spend a couple of hours (when I have them spare) to look around at other energy suppliers and check that we're getting the best deal - whet comparison sites does everyone use/recommend? Lavenders_Blue
Cheap Energy Club which is part of Martin Lewis' MoneySavingExpert is good. You can do your comparison and switch via the website, you also get a cash back for switching, and you can also sign up to be notified when a better deal comes along. It's dead easy and I'd recommend it.
The Dogmother
Thanks L_B, I'll have a look at that one.
