Debbie Bliss wool problem

Recommended Posts

I bought 16 balls of a lovely jade colour in Debbie Bliss dk wool to knit myself a jumper - at considerable cost as it is very expensive wool ! Finished the back of a very complicated cable pattern and spread it out to look at in and horror of horrors the dye on the last ball was considerably lighter.

The wool was ordered via my local shop as they did not have enough in stock so it came direct from the warehouse. All the dye lots were the same and I started knitting it within a week of it arriving. The next 2 balls I looked at were also different shades from each other. I nearly cried!

I took lots of photos (will try to post later) and took the whole lot into the shop on Saturday. They were also horrified and decided the best thing to do was to fedex the whole lot to Debbie Bliss - including my knitted piece. Will be interesting to hear what they have to say.

I have been knitting since I was a child - 50 years or so - and this is the first time I have ever come across this in the same dye lot.

I am just glad that I started knitting it so quickly as I have a wool cupboard with lots of different projects lined up so it could have been there for months. As it was I still had the receipt in the bag and the shop remembered the order anyway

That is awful after so much effort. I had a similar problem after ordering online from a well-known supplier. Like you I had started knitting the garment straight away which is unusual for me. Unlike you I didn't check the batch numbers before I started, though it wouldn't have made a lot of difference either. There were a few joins in the first ball and after one of these joins (about halfway through the ball) there was a shade change - I didn't notice straight away because I was knitting in artificial light. When I noticed I got the next ball out and found that not only did the second ball have a different batch number, it also had a different design of label, so should have been easy to spot (to me had I bothered to check, and certainly to the packer who should have checked). So I was one and a half balls down. I rang the supplier and of course they had no more of the same batch left so I just had to send the odd ball back for a refund. I ended up knitting shorter sleeves and have a slight colour change at the back :( it was already a cropped jumper, so I couldn't make it shorter in the body. It was very disappointing and needless to say I haven't used the supplier again, and I wouldn't buy that brand of wool.

I hope you get it sorted out...

Her are a couple of views of the jumper back - the top quarter is lighter

And the next 2 balls of wool, which don't look the same

It was the first time I had used a chart for cabling and I was so pleased with myself. 2 weeks work :(

Sorry if the photos are too big, I have made them the smallest size possible in protobucket (I think)

How utterly gutting! I love the work you have done, but how disappointing that has happened. I can't only just see the shade difference on my iPad, but it's not great at seeing colours anyway. But the point is you shouldn't see any difference at all. Hope they can resolve it for you. Such a shame that you can't rely on the dye lots to be the same. I think I would actually be hopping mad :(

Well so far all Debbie Bliss have offered to do is replace the wool. I am not normnally a person who makes a fuss but I really don't think that is good enough. If I hadn't used the wool that would have been fine but I had worked for 2 weeks on the pattern.

At the moment my local shop are speaking to Debbie Bliss about it. None of this is the shop's fault and I have told them I am happy to take it on myself if they don't get anywhere. I am not after the moon, I would be quite happy with a refund for the faulty wool and a replacement set of wool. I don't think that is unreasonable.

Will wait a bit them maybe post something choice on their f/b page
