percy049
A few weeks ago I found out that I have a leaky aortic valve after a screening at uni. Saw another cardiologist yesterday at home, and he said I will need further tests and an operation Just have to wait around at home now as I'm no longer at uni

Daphne
Gosh what a shock for you I am assuming you are a youngster, being at Uni? I shall keep everything firmly crossed for you, I've just been through a nervewracking few weeks waiting on the results of tests, I know how you must be feeling. We have a few medical people on here, and hopefully some other Omleteers have direct experiences to share with you. Positive vibes coming your way
Chucky Mama
Sorry to hear this but how fortunate that it was spotted. What are you doing at uni? Might you be able to study at home a little? Have they given any idea of timescale for an operation and reovery if you have to have one. Such a shock, you must have lots of questions and concerns. Good luck
Groovychook
Best wishes from me too, that must have come as quite a shock Hope that you'll be treated quickly and on the mend soon. Hope too that Uni are understanding and being supportive. Just concentrate on getting better for now though! xx

The doctor said summer time for the op and full recovery is around 3 months.
sparkysmum
Oh my goodness percy049, that does sound scary but fortuitious that it has been discovered now. Just enjoy being looked after for the moment, you can always return to your studies when your surgery is over and you are feeling well. Best wishes from all at Sparkysmum's

Chucky Mama
Chucky Mama; I'm studying economics and finance, and I'm waiting to hear back from uni about what's gonna happen. The doctor said summer time for the op and full recovery is around 3 months. A little wait then. I hope that you can keep occupied and well during your wait. Fingers crossed that your uni can come up with a plan for you if you feel you want to continue studying in some way.

Olly
It must be a real blow to think you may have to miss out on some of your study time - but if you have to take time out to get this fixed, you will be able to catch up again, even if it means waiting till next year. Thank goodness it has been diagnosed.
The Dogmother
I'm sorry to hear that, but glad that it has been diagnosed early as young people heal much quicker than us oldsters. If it's any comfort, Phil's brother recently had an aortic valve replaced, and after the initial pain immediately afterwards, he made a speedy recovery. Good luck to you. PixieDust
Sorry to hear about this but you are young and as DM says, you will heal faster. Keep us posted and try not to worry about it too much
Ain't Nobody Here
Gosh, I echo what everyone else has said - best of luck with the op and recovery xx
majorbloodnock
I'm certainly not going to patronise and suggest this is just a minor op, but it's a measure of the level of medical care we have access to now that this is seen as a fairly routine procedure. The NHS carry out about 5,000 of these a year, so the surgeons are well practiced and the surrounding treatment is well understood. Moreover, as has already been mentioned, you have the major advantage of age and otherwise good health. Good luck and a speedy recovery. Lewis
Sorry to hear it, all the best with the op and recovery. I hope your uni is supportive and may be able to provide reading lists or material so you're a bit more prepared for next semester.
