Lobular Carcinoma In Situ.....Screening Issues!

Recommended Posts

I had my yearly mammogram today and the nurse said I will get another next year and still see someone at the same time as it is still just year 5 and then I will get a yearly mammogram for the next 5 years to make year 10 and then I can ask my gp to make sure I get one every year if I and he think I should so I am pleased with that answer today - I do not get my results for a couple of weeks so fingers crossed - the 64 mile each way to the hospital is a nightmare! 128 miles for a quick thing and had to wait for 2 hours between appointments in a roasting hot hospital - not great.

You should be able to get them like I do till at least year 10 and I for one am happy with that - It is a long boring journey and a long wait there but well worth it and I dont think there is much for me to worry about and neither does the nurse but in saying that - it was not palpable the last time - it was microscopic!

Nope, just had the five done as I was diagnosed LCIS at 45. Once I hit 50 it was a case of going back into the system and being called every 3 years! Hence my appealing to the genetics unit - had to fill in big questionnaire about family history. Mum had a mastectomy last year but they don't even seem to take that into account, from what I can gather there have to be a fairly significant number of blood rellies with the big C before you can go for annuals. I suspect that, all being well with present lump, I end up paying £140.00 per year for a private one and peace of mind.

I had my first of what will be an annual MRI today until I'm 'old' enough for mammograms (I'm 32) It's all scary stuff isn't it?! It was comforting to pop on here this evening and see others have been through similar things.

I've got a family history (mum & aunts) so was referred to the genetics clinic and got on to the screening program from that though we have none of the known genes. (also found a lump last year but it was fatty tissue!) I'm a bit worried about results as scared as to what they might find, one aunt was diagnosed at 30! Hey ho, hopefully its all ok, it's good that I'm being kept an eye on!

Keep fighting for the screening Soapdragon!

Good luck Soapy xx

I had to kick up a fuss some years back about something not dissimilar, but gynaecological; they refused to do yearly tests, so I said that unless they did them, I would save to go private, and would make a fuss in the press... let's just say that I wasn't very popular, but I got what I wanted. Even had to push for the hysterectomy

My reply finally arrived this morning and, guess what......they have turned me down for annual screening as my family history does not justify it  ! *** the family history; the fact is that I have cells that are the precursors to breast cancer..whether those ever do develop into full blown cancer is neither here nor there. They have already told me that I am at an increased risk due to these cells so I cannot understand why they would not then monitor them carefully!!!!

I am beyond anger and they are jolly lucky that the letter arrived on a Saturday when there is no one in the office to take my furious call!!!!!

I will be calling on Monday

unbelievable

Make sure you martial your arguments, find statistics, and if all else fails threaten to escalate your complaint internally and externally as well.

This makes me so furious, breast cancer is such an awful disease, we can't stop it but we can do our best to catch it early and give ourselves the best chance of life. I just don't understand why they are standing in your way, you must be a priority case. Good Luck on Monday :D
