When will I learn to trust my first instinct ?

Recommended Posts

I posted on the chicken clinic a couple of weeks ago about Lucie's mud ring around her eye.

I thought at the time it was odd that the mud ring only happened around one eye.

The mud ring has come and gone on different days.

Today I decided to give it a wash, which she was not impressed with, and dried it.

When I put her back on the floor, the light just caught her eye and I saw some tiny bubbles in it.

I booked the vets straight away.

She said Lucie could have myco or conjunctivitis and gave us some Baytril for 10 days.

She has been fine in all other ways and even hot footed it with the soggy cotton pad.

That means she has been sharing any germs for the last couple of weeks and I really hope she hasn't given any to the others.

Why didn't I take her to the vets when I first thought something was wrong - although it only looked like mud.

It's twice now that I've thought something was wrong and didn't act quick enough.

Luvackicken, your girls get five star treatment all the time and you did act in this instance and covered her (just in case). I have had myco, treated/put back out in large flock and all fine. Don't fret, if girl is eating and doing her usual chickeny things happily then after treatment, and if eye looks ok then I'd let her back out. You do, do the best for your girls, all your posts show that. My lot would be humph, we don't get that sort of attention!

Hope she is ok in a day or two :)

To be honest my first instinct is to go to the vets, then I try to wait 24 hours and see what's happening unless they are obviously very poorly. You really can't take her to the vets every time you suspect something might be wrong, it would bankrupt you!

You did a Stirling job spotting that, I would have assumed it was mud and thought no more of it so well done you, you have nothing to reproach yourself about....I'm sure there is no exact science to hen keeping as there always see,s to be something to worry about!!!! Always,,

I've had chickens with bubbles in their eyes don't agree with it meaning myco and if it was Tylan would be better not baytril don't beat yourself up I've had a bird with myco years ago you would know bubbling eyes, rattling coughing, sneezing generally quite ill I culled her leanne.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and wishes for me and Lucie :D

Lucie is doing well, in fact, her eye looked better the very next day :D

Lucie is funny though, she really knows I am after her

I pop down some treats which she won't come for and then when she does, she takes one bit and then runs off.

She hasn't worked out that when I catch her, I take her indoors for her own treats laced with the medicine

I did have a worry with Tilly though, as she had a watery eye and a slight mud bit developing yesterday.

I washed her face but she seemed fine today, but I will be keeping a very close eye on all of them.

The vet explained about Tylan.

She said it only came in big bottles and they couldn't get through the amount it came in because basically they didn't have enough chicken patients, and therefore cost the customer loads.
