Ursula123
For 2016 I would like to learn quilting but do not have a clue where to start, so I was hoping fellow omletters may be able to point me in the direction of a book, magazine or website for beginners. I am quite proficient on a sewing machine and OH gave me a sewing machine for quilting for my birthday earlier this year. Luckily I have a fabric stash as my mum was a dressmaker in the 50's, 60's and 70's and never threw anything out. I also have a few sentimental items of my parents clothing that are in a box in the loft and would like to do something with them, so instead of being in a box I can look at them. Thanks
Blackrocksrock
Well done on the machine - I am not long started doing this too and I love the Missouri Star Quilt Company utube videos of all their quilts - there are loads of them from beginner to expert and all really quite easy to do - there are so so many books I have loads but really not use most of them. Lucky you for the stash and look forward to seeing what you make.

Valkyrie
Having tried to start on my own without tuition at all I soon found that I was making one of those "a million ways how not to" do patchwork! I struggled for quite some time, although the points matched (working by hand) but it was getting the various parts to sit together as it grew from a medallion. I had loads of books including quilting for dummies! But I did eventually find a quilt shop that took courses. Now that I recommend because you have the hands on experience from the teacher. While she wasn't the best at teaching machine piecing (I say that now because I've learnt more since - always learning, and the gadgets that help you perfect that scant quarter inch seam are great) she showed me how to hand quilt. I have books galore too and I also go on Youtube to learn more - well I have the basics which help. There are a couple of quilt shops nearby and I will be going along to the coffee mornings this year - it helps to meet other ladies and they are always really encouraging and come up with ideas new to you to help. Coffee and biccies is always good! Not sure where you live in North Devon, but I have found these that offer courses. Sometimes I feel you need to check out the personalities and if you feel akin to them and can have a laugh (unlike the one that I started with) then you have struck gold! : http://www.patchfloradesigns.co.uk/PFD/navigate.php?%20catalogue=tuition http://www.rowantreestudio.co.uk/ http://www.vcrafts.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=25&Itemid=

Ursula123
Thank you so much Valkyrie for taking the time to look at classes in my area, I did not think of looking for a class as usually in this part of the country we are limited. Patch flora designs is only about 4 miles from me so will contact them. The other two are a little further but not too far to rule out. Plum not sure Valkyrie would want me and all my chooks
Valkyrie
Oops I have I must admit I saw that and thought it looked nice - too much on the go at the moment! I may have accidentally bought some fabric in the Craftsy sale though. Hah! Wait till I move and there'll be plenty of room for you and the chickens Ursulaonesietwosiethreesie! And you are welcome - it's only because I never knew such a shop existed where we used to live and I was struggling with what I had been doing. After we moved away that the MIL said oh there's a shop just up the road next door to my hairdressers! Well what a big help that was - but then once I had ventured up and had a look round my friend and I used to do courses and meet up for dinner at the same time. So now the internet is a great tool that I have a look for shops in the area when I'm on holidays and such! Sad person that I am. I think this year when we go to Mull again, OH is not planning to stop long in Oban otherwise I'll buy the little quilt shop up there - and for anyone going there it's not far from the ferry! Tiny but lovely and the owners are really nice! Also it's good to check out different shops - the owners have different tastes in fabric designs. At the moment the closest ones to me are about half an hour's drive away or more. Must say hello to Christian next time I go to the one near him!!!!
