Luvachicken
I would really like a new coat that goes down to my knees, keeps me warm and dry and doesn't moult feathers faster than my chickens. Also bunging it in the washing machine would be good. I would love it if it was like a toasty sleeping bag and had cuffs in the sleeves to keep out the wind. The coat I have at the moment is a Fat Face one. The feathers fall out all of the time onto my school clothes making me look a bit scruffy before the children come in. It leaks mostly on the shoulders and neck when it is raining so then I am damp for the rest of the morning and get soaked later standing in the playground at lunchtime. I've looked at some online in The North Face but they all seem to have feathers and I can't find details about washing. Can any of you lovely chook friends suggest a nice, warm coat ? Thank you x
Grandmashazzie
My coat is toasty warm,it is worn by newsreaders in the cold, dry clean only though I haven't had to do that yet. It was very very expensive but as I feel cold dreadfully ( I am one in fleece at beach on a sunny day ) I felt worth it. Make is Canada Goose, down filled. soapdragon
I have heard really good things about North Face....tho no personal experience! They do seem very expensive but have an outlet shop at Bicester Village on the M40 (or did last time I was there which was, admittedly, a few months back!) Luvachicken
Thank you both Perhaps North Face could be worth a visit at the weekend. Just going to look up Canada Goose Hang the expense if it keeps you warm and dry !!
Cat tails
Jack Wolfskin do very nice coats too. I haven't had one recently, but seem to remember they do good winter outdoor gear. Expensive though... Might be worth visiting a sports shop that sells ski clothes?
Luvachicken
Did look up Canada Goose and did see some very, very expensive coats. Very nice but sadly way over my budget Will look at Wolfskin Cat tails and maybe try some sport shops too, thank you
bluekarin
I have just purchased a new coat for very similar reasons! Not for leaking feathers, but water was coming in my pockets making tissues, mints, poop bags all soggy, and it was only just part hip length so my hips and thighs got soaked. I am now the very proud owner of a Seasalt, almost knee length parka style coat. Fully waterproof and windproof, breathable and is like wearing a super comfy sleeping bag. Its not hugely warm for if you do a lot of standing around, but on the dog walk the wind does not go through it at all, and I am only wearing it with my usual combo of vest top and a long sleeve top. No cardi or hoodie like I would do with my previous coat. Its worth a look now at they have a sale and mine was £60 pff I am thrilled with it and wish I bought it back in October last year. Luvachicken
TK Maxx is always worth a look for bargains if you have one nearby That's a good idea - there is one not far from us Going to hit the shops at the weekend, knowing my luck it will be warm again by then
Chortle Chook
Take a look at Land's End. Mine comes from there and I've had it for years. It still looks good, no feathers escaped, it can go in the washing machine, colour does not fade and you can see the various warmth ratings against each model. At the time I bought it (a good 5 years ago) I looked at North Face, but boy were they expensive, and not as clearly marked for how warm they were either. I think with them you are paying quite a lot for a brand name
Valkyrie
My warmest coat I bought year ago in America - Florida would you believe!!! I call it my Ice Station Zebra coat! Down filled and very heavy. Great for watching Hampshire play cricket at Southampton! TOASTY!!! I would think the Canada Goose ones are similar and hopefully not as heavy. For our normal outdoor walkabout gear most of ours are North Face. Hubby has layers upon layers and I have a gilet type which I think is merino wool with just a normal t-shirt (organic cotton £10 John Lewis) and brushed cotton long sleeved shirt (mens North Coast) from M&S can't remember cost. We go to Snow and Rock in Chertsey and they are really helpful there - I need to get another spare set of walking boots so if you would like to come with me any time I'd gladly take you for a look around. Lots of coats there in all sizes. My mum got a puffed one and is highly delighted as she's toasty and warm: http://www.snowandrock.com/womens-coats/clothing/fcp-category/list?resetFilters=true

Sil-El
Just looked at Canada Goose and nearly fell off my chair You're not the only one I don't even need a new coat, I was only looking out of curiosity after reading this thread. How the other half live eh?
Luvachicken
Just looked at Canada Goose and nearly fell off my chair Yes they were quite expensive weren't they I did manage to get a nice new coat this morning though Went for one in the Seasalt shop - sadly not in the sale though And they even let me try it outside to test it in the wind chill It worked a treat, now I just need the cold weather to stay and perhaps a bit of rain to test it. Luvachicken
Just watched Countryfile and it seems like I bought my new coat just at the right time. Cold and windy tomorrow followed by wet and windy for the rest of the week, perfect conditions for testing my coat
soapdragon
Oh well......in that case is there any chance of you sourcing a swimsuit then Might guarentee us some warmer weather
Luvachicken
I can try soapdragon If not, you could always console yourself with some sneaky chocolates that I mentioned in another post Did wear my new coat for school today on playground duty and lunch time and it has lived up to the job so far. I'll see how it fares for the rest of the week.

Charlottechicken
Which Seasalt coat did you get, Luvachicken? I've just bought one of their raincoats (expecting a wet summer ) off ebay, secondhand of course, and just wondered what they are like. The one I have bought retails at around £120, and is tin cloth cotton. Not had any experience of Seasalt, but always love browsing on ebay! Grandmashazzie
They have some nice ones in the sale on their website. I have a light summer raincoat of theirs and I love it. I am not allowing anymore winter coats until I wear mine out

I bought the Plant Hunter coat Charlottechicken and have been nice and toasty ever since. Haven't had any real rain to test it in yet but tomorrow looks promising Was a bit cross at school yesterday though as some children had been playing with sneaked in nail varnish Of course I didn't realise it was wet on a child's hands until it was all over my hands. Typically there was a bit on my cuff which I spotted today so I showed those children and got cross with them again - fortunately, being children's nail varnish, I got it off with a wet paper towel Hopefully no harm done.
