Luvachicken
All summer holiday I have given up having sugary snacks with my lunch and no nibbles in between and I have carried on. I try to have 2 pieces of fruit with my lunch instead and not have pudding at tea time. The trouble I'm finding is that I am really hungry when the children I work with go out to play. I take fruit but then I don't really want too much fruit as it is sugary itself. I took nuts but was told not to bring them again. I just wondered if any have some tasty and healthy snack recipes - I tried Ryvita with seeds and strawberry in, not bad, bit like an ice cream cone without the ice cream and I did wonder about crackers but then some of them have sugar and salt Any ideas ? Cat tails
Why not things like carrot, cucumber, bell pepper ( really don't like those myself, the peppers)? Otherwise increase the amount of fiber you eat in the meal before it. If you are more satiated from that, you are less likely to be hungry later on. Luvachicken
I do like raw carrot BUT sadly grated with apple and then covered in salad cream Otherwise I hate raw carrot. I do like cucumber though and might try peppers as I've only ever had them roasted. Thanks Cat tails

mullethunter
When I'm trying to be healthy I tend to keep rice cakes nearby to snack on. I actually like the taste of the plain or buckwheat ones - they remind me of popcorn - but I often have them with sliced tomato, boiled egg, or cheese (not quite so healthy with cheese). I do pretty well at eating healthy stuff during the day and don't tend to snack, but I struggle not to eat pudding in the evening. I'm by no means overweight but I know I eat way too much sugar. Luvachicken
Oh dear, I must be really fussy I don't like hummus and I can't stand the smell of rice cakes - sorry. I think you like rice cakes because they remind you of popcorn Mullethunter but I don't like popcorn either
Cat tails
Maybe go for a protein based snack instead? Just a boiled egg (if you are gifted one by the ladies... ) or a small yoghurt with not too much sugar?

chickencam
Protein based snacks take longer to digest, so hard boiled egg, small chunk of cheese, cottage cheese, plain yoghurt etc . Shame that you can't have nuts but I suppose it is understandable.

mullethunter
Chocolate brownie with walnuts. We've discussed this at work. The chocolate comes from cocoa beans, and beans count as one of your 5 a day. The butter is basically converted grass so another of your 5 a day The flour is made of grass seeds so number 3 of your 5 a day. Sugar comes from either beat or cane - another vegetable. Eggs, and nuts, as previously discussed, are healthy sources of protein. So there you have it. A healthy snack! You're welcome

Plants convert sunlight, chicken converts plants. And there is absolutely "Ooops, word censored!"ody who ever got fat on just sunlight... You two are so funny Although I might have to swap the walnuts for pecans or even chocolate drops So glad to know that a piece of brownie is almost all my fruit and veg portions for one day
Grandmashazzie
I am cutting out refined sugar and miss the sweetness of something with a cuppa. I have been snacking on dried figs, medjool dates, these are sweeter and plumper than ordinary ones with a little almond butter. These are high in calories but I don't know whether your body uses fruit sugars differently,it all seems very complicated. I certainly haven't gained weight and I would nibble a good number. Cat tails
Sorry to be the barer of bad news but... Sugar is sugar. Whether it came from a date (which are often soaked in sugar water...) or from a sugar cube. It doesn't matter one bit. Your body will digest it in the exact same way. The only pro in eating fruit instead of a biscuit or candy, is that fruit has some fiber (not alot) and vitamins.
Luvachicken
Oh dear, and there's me thinking dried fruit is good for you. Sometimes it does make you wonder what on earth we can eat
Cat tails
Things as raisins aren't too sugary, but dried cranberries are almost always sugared. Just eat what you like! But not too much!
Couperwife
what about bacon and egg muffins? In a muffin cake case, line it with a rasher of bacon, crack an egg into it (or a whisked up egg if you prefer) put some chives on the top and bake in the oven until set. You can either eat them hot or cold (we normally eat most of the hot!!) Cathy x
