soapdragon Posted June 30, 2017 Share Posted June 30, 2017 We have booked 5 nights self catering at a property on the edge of The Mumbles/Gower for w/c 21 Aug. The property is privately owned and they do not offer insurance with the booking. We simply want insurance against one of us being too poorly to travel, jury service for either of the two adults, illness or death of immediate family - just very basic stuff. However, the broker that I normally use for car insurance etc has quoted us over £35 and this includes repatriation, loss of currency, mega bucks for medical bills, cover for flight problems/loss of luggage etc........not really anticipated for just west of Swansea! When I queried this they just said that it was what came as a 'package' and they couldn't offer anything else less - doh! Do any of you wise ones know of anywhere I could just get what I need? We are on a tight budget so don't want to pay for things we def, def!!! won't need! I feel that I'd just travel without but - doh - can't afford to lose the £575 should the worst happen! However, we usually book with a self catering cottage company and the cancellation insurance comes as part of the price so we've not really needed it before (apart from Prague!) Travel insurance is usually fairly cheap and it's cheaper to buy an annual policy if you're going to go away more than once - but check in case you already have cover through your bank account or similar. I might not bother for the UK but I would never, ever travel abroad without good comprehensive cover. It's not just medical treatment, it's the cost of repatriation - if you break a leg you may well need two seats on the plane, for example. You only have to look at the news to see tragic stories each year of families who are struggling to get someone home who is in a coma or sadly sometimes they can't afford to bring their body back home. Don't forget that travel insurance also covers things like you being unable to travel because of a bereavement. I don't think £25-30 for a year's policy covering all this is poor value! Always check the details because it may not cover things like climbing, water sports etc but please don't leave the UK without cover - even if you're only going to the EU. Sorted that out today...should have done it when I first investigated it as had gone up from £10 to £14 for those 5 days I guess its two weeks nearer We just wanted to make sure we'd get at least some money back should someone fall ill! The cost was minimal and covered us for all sorts of impromptu jollies. Now health has become an issue they have a "free spirit" division that covers us too, all be it at a greater cost and on a per trip basis. The company we use is " http://www.pjhayman.com/travel-insurance" - we find them very good and being a smaller company they might be sensible regarding a short uk trip. Sir T our great hero too!
