Purplemaniacs
Omleteers, I am hoping you can give me some advice. For almost 10 years I have stored my chicken food in the utility but in just over a week the utility is being replaced and after that I will not be able to keep the chicken food in the lovely new utility. What storage bin would you recommend for food storage outside. The shed is too full of rubbish to fit a bin in there. It will need to keep vermin out as we live in the country. Thanks in advance. Luvachicken
I've always stored mine in plastic dustbins with the metal bits that keep the lid on, but I know Dogmother recommends metal bins.
Grandmashazzie
Me too luvachicken and I keep it in WIR.
Sara_PC
I keep mine in metal bins too but in a shed...would be worried about keeping them outside in case they got damp.
Geoid
Galvanised metal bin, with some weight/bungee cord to keep the vermin out. Should be fine outside!
Hippie Chick
I bought a couple of galvanised metal bins with lids from B&Q. I have bungee cord with hooks at each end to keep the lids on tight and they've withstood all the gales and torrential rains without letting any dampness in at all. Beantree
An old chest freezer is ideal, but it is an eyesore and perhaps needs painting for disguise.
Daphne
Galvanised bin, perfectly OK outdoors
Egluntyne
Galvanised metal bins here.
Grandmashazzie
I used to keep mine in the shed but there was occasional spillage of few pellets and that attracted a rat. He was shut in and had to chew his way out or maybe chewed his way in and ran past me when I went to get food. We moved it outside rather entice visitors to the new shed. mullethunter
Same as Luvachicken. And I keep my bin in the ‘lean-to’ bit outside my shed so it is out of the worst of the weather
Luvachicken
Same as Luvachicken. And I keep my bin in the ‘lean-to’ bit outside my shed so it is out of the worst of the weather Yes, mine is also sheltered, under a car port.
GillC
I have used a galvanized bin in the garage, but mice were able to crawl in under the loose fitting lid - I could tell by the mice poop. I've now bought a purple plastic bin with a lid that clips on tightly having read review comments that said it was ideal for feed. My main worry is that mice will find it and chew through it, but I'll have to wait and see.
Lewis
We used to keep feed in plastic bins in the shed but now just keep feed bags on a bench in the side passage. A friend has IKEA Sortera stacking bins for chick crumb, growers and layers pellets that I think look great.
