Suziwoo
Excuse the question, but should I be washing my girls bottoms every so often. One of them has had quite a dirty one pretty soon after getting them. The other two seem fine, but Dippy's looks as though it should have been wiped and has now dried on. I know there are washing guidelines on the website, but I was just wondering if others do bath their girls regularly. (I think I would know I was holding Dippy if I was blindfolded - if you know what I mean!!!)
Shirl
Hi Sue I'm only down the road from you in Writtle. Don't know the answer to your question though. Sorry.
Egluntyne
Occasionally I have to give them a bit of a wipe and I trim the erm....gunky bits off.
Mel (& Paul)
You can bathe your chooks - get a washing up bowl of warm water and just wash their dirty feathers until the poo softens and comes off. If it is a warm day they can dry outside (dont let htem near any dirt holes until they have dried though..............!) If its cold you could, if you want dry them with a hair dryer - low cool setting though! When Reepicheep was poorly we gave her a few warm baths and she loved them - I think like any poorly person feeling clean makes you feel instantly bette.r
The Dogmother
It's best to clean the poo off their botties or it will attract flies and they'll run a risk of having flystrike. Why do they have pooey botties? It might be worth looking at their diet... cut out all fruit, veg and other 'wet food' for a while, just give them pellets, grain and Bokashi bran to bind their poo up a bit and then slowly introduce some greenery. It may be that they are just getting too many greens; a healthy chook poo should be firm, apart from every 10th one being yellow and frothy. Tweety
I have had to wash the bottom of one of my 6 girls, although the other 5 seem to be as clean as a whistle! I don't know why Bluebell makes a mess when the others don't, but it was fairly easy to wash her. She looked pathetic from the rear end until the feathers dried properly, and I couldn't say that she enjoyed the experience, but it looks as if it is going to be a regular thing with her - messy girl! Suziwoo
Thanks everyone - looks like I'e got a fun job ahead of me. Good job she is the one who is easiest to stroke and pick up! Hi Shirl. I'll be over your way (sort of) in a couple of weeks time as I'm starting a course at Anglia Ruskin Uni. Every Tuesday for a long long time! Claret, I will get hold of some Bokashi as I don't have any. I don't really give the girls too many greens, but I'll watch it for a few days. Thanks again. chelsea
we've always done our girls frilly knickers. They love having it done,...all nice and fresh for them and then they pop into "The Salon" (which is the garage ) and have their bums dried infront "the professional drier" (which is the tumble drier vent ) !! The Dogmother
You're a nutter Chelsea! Try putting Avipro in the water too, that and the Bokashi bran will keep the flora in their gut healthy and avoid tummy upsets that cause runny poo. You can get Avipro online or from your vet and it dissolves in water.
chelsea
im gonna try some of that Bokashi for my girls. Thanks Clare !!
The Dogmother
Try mixing it in their food daily anyway Chelsea - it helps their digestion. Eating lots of slugs gives them runny bots too. Avipro is wonderful and I always keep it around for any ailing animal - works a treat.
