craftyhunnypie
OMG! there has been a plane crashed flying from Bahrain to Phuket! We are going Phuket, Thailand in February We are flying Manchester to Doha (middle East), Doha to Bancock, Bancock to Phuket! I can't see it happening twice, but it kind of shakes you a little! Every time we go away, there is always something a few months before going on there! We went to Turkey when the Gulf war was on & there were big canons on top of all the mountains! When we went to Goa, India the first time - we were told to put the blinds down on the plane. Of course we peeped, to find that we were being escorted over the gulf by fighter planes!!!! We touched down in Bahrain for 2 hours as part of our journey. You'd have never guessed that there was any trouble going on in Iraq & Afghanistan as the people were so friendly calm! I loved Bahrain airport full of gold & exquisite gifts etc. Emma.x
Geoid
I went to Bahrain a few years ago, the people their are soo kind, giving us free stuff etc The police always said hello as we walked past, even though they where holding some massive automatic weapon (which was a bit scary)
craftyhunnypie
Would you believe me if I told you that my mum went out with (dated) the King of Bharain in her youth?? He was just a prince then. No you probably wouldn't, but it is true...I could have been a princess! Ha ha! When we got off the plane at Bahrain there was a huge photo of him at the airport and my mum whispered to me who he was! So the next time we flew there I started singing ' Getting to know you' from the King & I! Mum knew what I was pulling her leg about!!!! My claim to fame, but I'd sooner have my lovely dad any day! chelsea
I work for an airline. The phrase "you'll be perfectly fine" springs to mind!! I hate flying, but I wouldnt tell my passengers that.... I know how you feel Emma. Everytime we fly somewhere there seems to be a major disaster occuring. Just before we flew to Hong Kong one of the planes shot over the runway and went into the sea (remember that?! ) I have never landed anywhere so scarey as on that runway in the middle of the harbour at Hongkong...how the pilots did it - I dont know

Rona
Last year I flew to Dubai via Amsterdam. The Norwich to Amsterdam part of the journey was the bumpiest flight I have ever been on - had to hold on with both hands, then we couldn't get into Amsterdam for about half an hour because of an electrical storm. Found out later that it was the night that north London had that tornado. Luckily the rest of the journey was lovely and smooth as I too hate flying - but sometimes you just got to do it! Just keep reminding yourself that it is still safer than many other ways of travelling.

Egluntyne
Miraculously the pilot and co pilot seem to have survived according to the news.
SarahJo
Sad - another plane crash. OH watches crash programmes and the aircraft type that has crashed is renowned (sorry ) for faults. Having said that we were discussing the other accidents that have occured over the weekend, and he said that most have a definite reason. One of the spitfire (airshow accidents) was due to a part being replaced the wrong way round. I always fly with an aircraft engineer (OH ) and he has been called up to the cockpit to "assist" before. The hong Kong runway is a challenge - so is Innsbruck, coming through the mountains . Still a safe way to travel - so don't worry. Just sad when it does happen as there are more people travelling on that mode of transport, so it always worse in terms of numbers of fatalities/injuries. Guest
I'm not so keen on flying either but I love going to other countries seeing their culture etc so I dont have much choice. But the thing I always try and remember is your more likely to be kicked to death by a donkey than die in a plane crash! Stay away from donkeys. Couperman
I think the pilot maybe should have diverted to avoid the bad weather. Phuket is probably the safest place to fly to for the next twenty years, statistically speaking. I don't mind flying but have on a few occasions thought 'he ain't going to pull this one off' I didn't think you could land sideways, Air Aarron can! There were a few hail Mary's on that flight I can tell you. Kev.
AnnieP
Don't say that Annie has donkeys .... Its perfectly true though.... More people are killed each year through donkeys than horses! Back to the plane crash though, makes you realise how fortunate we all are to be alive and well doesn't it?

We were on a KLM flight a few years ago coming into Amsterdam the plane bounced from one wheel to another down the runway - everyone was cheering when the plane levelled up Also on a flight coming out of Saudi the plane was taking off and we were rising when it hit an air pocket and dropped about 40ft - it was a stomach in your mouth job (not to mention a few other things) Those were the days I lived in the middle east so was flying frequently - also knew alot of the mechanics for Emirates airlines - they could drink for England Helen
Couperman
I remember once watching from the business lounge type area, the ground crew tinkering with a BA jet. One of them saw me watching them and proceeded to put a big cross of gaffer tape on the wing! I thought it was quite amusing but I know more nervous flyers would like them to take the job a bit more seriously I don't suppose BA would have been amused either:shock: Kev.
