Patricia W
Anyone watching this? I read the books when my children were younger, and I’m sitting here captivated by the televised adaptation. Added interest is that it’s set in Oxford, a city I love. Watch it on catch up if you’ve missed the first episodes!
soapdragon
I have never read the books although ES has, several times, and is now again on the last one. YS hasn't yet shown interest but none of us liked The Golden Compass - it seemed disjointed and we found it difficult to work out what was going on! In view of the hype surrounding His Dark Materials I've now started reading the trilogy and am at the stage, in Northern Lights, where Lyra is at the court of the bears. As ES is again working his way through the books we are recording the series but won't watch until ES has finished. Oxford is our nearest city - would take us about 20 mins from home to the car park in the centre but we tend to Park and Ride. Like PW we know the city/universities very well and it is odd to read about it all from a 'fantasy' point of view! I am halfway looking forward to seeing the TV adaptation as, when I have read the books first, I do have a mental picture in my mind. and it's often disappointing to see the on screen version! The BIG plus point with His Dark Materials is that James McEvoy is playing Lord Asriel......................................................................................😍
Cat tails
Yes! James McEvoy.....🤤 Bought the books a few weeks back, only to discover that it would be aired. Haven’t gotten round reading it, which I’m not sure I regret yet.
soapdragon
Hmmm, that's a difficult one . I think, on reflection, that I'd probably rather read the books first but then I have VERY vivid imagination I first saw James McEvoy as Mr Tumnus and still have difficult with his legs - even as Charles Xavier Edited November 17, 2019 by soapdragon forgetfulness
Patricia W
I think it helps to have read the books to keep track of the story line but then, I would say that, wouldn’t I? I’ve just bought copies of his latest ones for my grandchildren. One set for each family ( I have 8 grandchildren so figured they could share). The oldest 14, and 12 are loving them. The others aged 7 downwards are too little yet, but hope they’ll get into them later. Edited November 18, 2019 by Patricia W
Valkyrie
I did enjoy the books - my son lent them to me to read. I got quite absorbed in them!
soapdragon
I've now finished the trilogy and am champing at the bit for ES to finish the last book too so that we can start watching the series. I guess we'll get to binge watch over Christmas at the rate ES reads . Mind you, I'm already aerated about the casting of Lee Scoresby; in the books he is described as tall and thin. I want an Iorek Byrnison though!
Cat tails
As I understand, this season will be book one, and the other two books will follow in two more seasons.
