I don't think it's as black and white as yes/no- whereas I think I am going to enjoy their antics and personality, the initial reason I wanted to get them was partly for eggs and partly to rescue them and give them a better life (they're ex-batts)- I don't intend to make pets out of them as such but I'm sure I will be fond of them.

if mine never laid an egg in their lives or stopped laying suddenly and never laid again I wouldn't mind - so that makes them pets. And I look after them and talk to them as much as to all my other pets. In fact I have never thought of them as anything else. Why would you name something that wasn't a pet and agonise for so long as to what name suits their personality!
