Cinnamon
Are you a Cat person or a Dog person? I am a cat lover for these reasons - 1 - Cats are furry, Dogs are hairy 2 - Dogs smell, Cats don't 3 - Cats are independant, Dogs are needy 4 - Cats purr - I love that 5 - I don't do the doggy slavish devotion thing - Cats have more character than that 6 - You can never really tell what a Cat is thinking.Dogs are an open book. 7 - You don't need to walk a cat And before you ask, yes, I do have a Dog, but she belongs to the Hubby & we tolerate each others presence in the house

Ziggy
Well I'm a cat lover too, I have five of them and totally adore them, though I might add this to your reasons: 2: Cats themselves don't smell much... but their breath can be rather fishy and when they decide to fart while snuggling up with you, you certainly notice 3: Cats are so independant they can be s"Ooops, word censored!"bish!!! They own me rather than me owning them. 6: At times I know exactly what my cats think : 'I just settled down on your lap/book/laptop keyboard and I like it here... SO DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT MOVING ME' 7: You don't have to walk the cats, but at times you end up in the garden at midnight shouting 'Shaaaadoooow.... where are youuuuuu... commmmeee hooooommmmmee' wondering if neighbours are going to throw their slippers at you... But yes they purr and they are so, so full of personality!!! I want a dog, but cats are always going to be my favourite...
Tessa the Duchess
Dogs for me. I like to see a cat around the house, elegantly sprawled on the sofa, but they don't really 'do' it for me like a dog does. A dog is more like a friend than a pet, they seemed tuned in to you, if you feel sad they comfort you and if you feel happy they they are happy too. Sure they shed their hair everywhere, they drag you out for a walk when you really would like to stay in the warm, but they are worth all the bother. ali-s
Both for me Bought my first cat when future OH bought his house as a house warming present, though secretly she was mine at the weekends. Got married and two more kittens appeared Cindy was a rescue cat and died recently aged 19 years. The others lived well into their teens as well. I like the fact that cats are independant and love it when they purr when you stroke them. I also like dogs because they are dependant on you. They get you out of the house because they need excercise (sp?). dogs are loyal and you are the centre of their world. Archie my Pappilon is a mixture of dog and cat He is as small (8 inches high) as a cat and sprawls out on the sofa in the sunshine. He makes a funny little throaty noise when you stroke him. He also is definately a dog, loves a good walk of a couple of miles, swims in the sea in the middle of winter, manages to retrieve a full size frisby although he can't see where he is going when he comes running back with it and he thinks he is as big as a great dane. bronze
I think dogs but I do like cats too just DH is allergic Cats DO smell, maybe you don't notice it because you get used to the smell. Dogs also smell You may have to walk a dog in the rain but they also stop you getting fat. Depends to breed of cat and dog as to furry/hairy. Cats are independent great but whats the point then. Dogs may be needy but I need them more than they need me. Dogs save lives and dont bring you 'presents' but they do bark loudly Give me a proper dog and a fat tabby by the fire and I would be happy Why does it have to be one or the other. Afterall the quiz could just as well be cats or hamsters
Cinnamon
I Cats DO smell, maybe you don't notice it because you get used to the smell. Strange - I have never noticed a cat smell, & I have sniffed my cat to see if I can smell anything too Maybe the Doggy smell just overpowers it? Seriously, I hate that Doggy smell. It comes from when I was younger & went to a relatives house that was just so smelly that it made me feel sick But they were a special case - 3 dogs in a small room with no ventilation, & were never walked .......... Now I can notice Dog smell really easily & it just makes me shudder.
Ziggy
My husband is the same, he doesn't seem to notice the smell of cats at all, but the smell of dogs just makes him want to run a mile... he likes the idea of dogs, but the smell of them just is something he doesn't want to live with... it's because of that (and the regular travelling we do) that we can't have a dog... Basset
5 - I don't do the doggy slavish devotion thing - This doesn't describe our dog at all !!!!!!! Basset's definately think the world revolves around them, and nothing or no-one else's interests count at all. They definately think they matter most!!! Any food being prepared - she believes it must belong to her! Any visitors to the house are here to see her! etc. She drives me absolutely crazy!! chelsea
Dogs!! Definitely You cant walk a cat, dogs can be trained and obedient - cats have a mind of their own. My dog doesnt smell! We take our dog on holiday, long walks in the countryside and beach. My dog is also my protector as hubby work nights and she makes me feel safe at night alone in the house ( a cat wouldnt do that !) Also cat poo stinks.....yuk. and they poo in my garden borders.
lost-sheep
CATS!!!! everytime!! it's always nice to wake up with a furry hot water bottle.... (except my kitty ziggy always pokes me in the eye with her paw ... "hey... open these then you will see me and love me and feed me! purrrrrr" !!!!!!! ) hey and you don't have to clear up after cats yuck!! missuscluck
Ooh this is a difficult one as we have both. I always prefered cats as we have always had one and never had a dog, however we got our little Jack russell 8 years ago and now we have had him for all that time and got used to him I am a bit torn and would probably say dogs. He really loves us to bits and cares weather we are around. I always think our cat is not botherd unless it suits (like some people!) the dog however is unconditional. I feel safe with him when im home alone, as no one can yet within 20m of the house without him going balistic! Another plus point is the nice long walkies. Snowy
I said neither I prefer chickens! Cats and dogs are freeloaders! Actually I do like cats and dogs - but I'm allergic to some cats and my Dad is even worse than me, otherwise I'd quite like a cat. And I love my little dog Dennis. He's good company and takes me for walks. But what I'd really like is (as Bron says) a fat tabby by the fire and my 'proper' dogs would be a pair of golden retrievers. Rona
Has to be cats every time. My OM was a dog man until he met me and my cats - and it is mutual, they abosolutely adore him!! I'm sure if they had to choose they would dump me and go with him. Here is George putting his feet up, he has to work so hard at looking after us. He is 14½ and has had a dicky ticker since he was a kitten. We nearly lost him early this year and he is now on medication, but doesn't know that - he just thinks he has been a very good boy and gets a treat twice a day (liver pate with a pill hidden inside)
chickencam
Cats every time dogs DO smell you can tell as soon as you walk into a house if a dog lives there. Cats come to you on their terms but that's fine I can't stand animanls or people who are needy and suck up to you. Last night our black & white Scamp had us in stiches trying to eat OH's cheese and onion crisps. She saw his 'paw' go into the packet then he put the crisp in his mouth and she couldn't understand why he was less than keen when she tried this
