Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

Barney came in at lunchtime and his eye looked half closed so I had a quick look just to make sure and it seemed fine. Not red or anything so off he went again.

 

Ashley came home from school with him in his arms to say that he had found him outside and all his face was swollen. Had a quick look and whisked him off to the vets. HUGE HUGE HUGE abscess on the side of his face . The vet had to "open it up" with a scalpel and drain off everything in there. Horrific poor pus(s) - pardon the pun!! Bless him, it must have been absolutely awful for him. The vet said it would have been extremely painful.

 

Now his poor mum has got to keep squeezing it for the next few days (urgh) never mind the 3 antibiotics I've got to get down the little darlings' throat. That's going to be such a fun weekend.

oh no, poor Barney. Bet he feels better now.

 

Don't feel bad, they swell up incredibly quickly, and until they do it's hard to see if there's anything under all the fur. I didn't realise my cat had his most recent abscess (there have been several !) till I discovered he was seeping fluid all over the sofa Investigation revealed an enormous hole in his backside with two very visible toothmarks!

 

I felt terrible for not noticing it earlier, but he had not appeared off-colour and I hadn't noticed any swelling.

 

I keep telling him 'just walk away' but he will insist on defending his territory ...

Poor cat!

I know how it is. We were treating Obelix with 6 pills a day for about a month. After being under anesthesics twice and pus drained from his ear a specialist vet realized that he had a polyp growing in his ear. He must have suffered terrible pain. Nasty.

 

We developed a least stressful technique how to feed him the pill- hubby held him in arms like a baby while holding his legs and I would open Obelix's mouth and drop the pill at the back of his throat. Hope this helps.

 

In case somebody wonders, Obelix is fine now (for about 2 ears), but still walking with head leaning after his balance centre was messed up. Looks cute though

Olly's right, these things appear very quickly and it's impossible to find anything through all their fur!

My kitty boys send furry hugs to Barney and we all hope he's well soon.

I did a quick clean up on it half an hour ago with cooled boiled salted water. It looks horrible. Quite a big cut and the horrid stuff is still pouring out. Poor little boy

The nasty stuf is still pouring out of the gaping hole in his cheek BUT the good news is he loves Dairylea and wolfed down his 1 and a half tablets in one go so at least he has had his anti-biotics for the evening.

 

And it's got to be far less painful now the pressure has gone than it must have been earlier for him Poor little devil. The vet thinks that he had been in a fight and been bitten by another cat - there is a particularly large and particularly nasty tabby across the road that likes to thrash Parsley at any given opportunity so I wouldn't be surprised if he is to blame Grr

Be glad that the vet could deal with it there and then. Last year Wellington got a very bad bite on his head, and the resultant abscess required a general anaesthetic, surgery, stitches, and drains which had to stay in for the best part of a week.

 

That cost £450. And no, I don't have pet insurance! (He is worth it though )

Don't know if this link will work but I found it once and it makes me laugh everytime I read it. Our Freddie was always at the vets - he definitely had more than 9 lives!!!!!! Giving him pills in the beginning was a nightmare but the older he got the more accepting he was of his fate!!!!

Barney is pretty much the same this morning. It doesn't seem to have filled up again so I'll just keep an eye on him and he doesn't seem particularly bothered by it at all. Very good boy for taking his tablets so fingers crossed the infection will go within a few days.

 

He just isn't very impressed at being confined to base

My Millie was like that when it was time for her worming tablet, the vet used to get his gauntlets out!

I go for the 'stick it in fish and pray' approach. Abcesses are horrid, but they dry up and heal surprisingly quickly, Arthur seems to have one constantly (mental note - bother the Celia Hammond people some more) at the moment, so I just take him in every couple of weeks for a check up and a jab of antibiotics. Much easier than tablets.

 

Hope Parsley feels better soon. And evil cat loses his mojo.

Thanks everyone Barney is definitely getting back to normal although it still looks very sore and is still gaping open. He has been so good taking his tablets - although I end up with 6 cats clamouring around me for a bit of dairylea as soon as I try to give him his anti-biotics

 

The cat over the road is vile - I have never said that about any cat before. Once I had been to a neighbours and opened their front door to leave. Parsley was at the door waiting for a fuss from me and this tabby thing appeared from nowhere and had him by the throat at my feet It was horrible to watch. But that makes me pretty certain that he is the culprit of Barney's bite

 

Barney is back at the vets on Thursday for a checkup so I'll let you know how he gets on.

Does the Evil Cat belong to anyone? It might be worth suggesting that he is neutered (if he hasn't already been done). That would take the wind out of his sails Vets will offten neuter strays for free or at a huge discount if you ask.

He belongs to a neighbour just down the road and I'm pretty certain that he has had the snip He is huge as cats go and at least twice the size of my 2 boys and they aren't small

 

I just squirt him with water everytime I see him come anywhere near our house

When we first got George we had an aerosol flea spray we used to use on him. We only used it for a bit, he is 13 now & still runs and hide whenever we squirt any aerosol
