Beaudyne
Silver spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben hatching eggs!? Hi, I’m trying to find some appenzeller hatching eggs to hatch my own. I’m really struggling to find anything, so if you have any info that would be greatly appreciated! 😊
Beantree
The Poultry Club of Great Britain has the breed club/ society contact details of Mr Ian Graham in Cumbria, however with the current avian flu outbreak I doubt anyone will let you collect eggs and posting them is very risky. They are pretty though. 1
Luvachicken
Golly, no wonder you would like to hatch your own. That really is a very posh and stunning looking chicken.
Patricia W
But my constant question....,what about the boys? So many unwanted cockerels this year it breaks my heart 2
Beaudyne
@Patricia W I completely agree! Would love some cockerels but atm haven’t got adequate housing to keep them separate x

(Which you most likely will) Wouldn’t it be better to source a breeder and get sexed birds?
Beaudyne
@Cat tails oh I see! Well if I end up hatching just a couple boys I’ll keep them and ask my husband nicely to build them a lovely home 😅 otherwise I’d have to sell/give them away if I get too many. Already have some friends or are looking.

Even in separate housing.

I would love to live somewhere like that..... then I could have my old Pekins, some new ones and room for some rescues. 1
Beaudyne
@Luvachicken Thank you!! 🥰 I am very lucky to have the space here. It’s actually my grandfather’s house that me and my husband moved in in 2019 to take care of him. He’s just as chicken mad as me, as he used to have a good size flock when he was in his 30’s! I already have some friends who are looking for cockerels and even if I didn’t I’m sure there’d be people on here who’d happily take in a beautiful Appenzeller cockerel 😅

ellasflock
Hi so if you still want to know where you can find some hatching eggs, eBay is a great place. Make sure you clean the eggs when you get them with egg cleaner, and that should all be okay for you. here is a link to an eBay seller who sells the hatching eggs you are looking for, you probably won’t find any hatching eggs cheaper then this 👍🏻https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-x-Appenzeller-Spitzhauben-hatching-eggs/313381493119?hash=item48f6fe197f:g:9c0AAOSwh-Rf6yq8
Beaudyne
@ellasflock thanks for this! Will definitely send them a message. However I’ve since contacted the guy @Beantree recommended and he has said I can ‘have’ the eggs and just pay for postage 😄 incredible really 👍 Edited January 15, 2021 by Beaudyne

Patricia W
Beaudyne, if you are going to plan to keep the cockerels do remember the recommended ratio is 1:10. Or some say 1:12. Any fewer, and you run the risk of the males damaging the hens by too frequent matings and fighting together. So, you need plan b - which might be rehoming surplus boys, ( and that is not easy,) or you may have to be prepared for plan c - to cull them when they mature. Of course, you may be lucky and have all girls, but best be prepared. Keep us posted.
Lewis
Great that you managed to get some hatching eggs! I echo the comments above, have a plan for the boys - I often say don't hatch if you can't dispatch.
ellasflock
@Patricia W not necessarily, I have a rooster and I have 4 hens, my rooster is perfectly fine and people I have spoken say the same thing, you don’t know unless you try ☺️ And of course culling isn’t the best idea. Also I recommend, if you do get a rooster, put it on Preloved.com or Pets4homes, because lots of people buy roosters, surprisingly! Also if you know someone local who sells chickens you can offer your rooster because they are always looking for more roosters to breed with. Cat tails
I’m with Lewis on this. Maybe a 1:4 ratio works for silkies @ellasflock, but this is certainly not the case for all breeds. See the post of Annabel on her over treading cockerel.
Patricia W
The best place to rehome roosters is on dedicated Cockerel rehoming sites. Sadly, pets4homes and similar are where people who want a cheap meal or for cock fighting pick them up. The organisations I would recommend from personal experi nice are HPG Cockerel Rehome and Red Rooster Rescue. They have FB Pages. BHWT and Fresh Start For Hens will also help. This year in particular there has been a glut of beautiful boys looking for homes. Too many people decided to have a go at hatching because they were locked in. Now there are boys being abandoned in car parks, town centres and people’s gardens. So I’m with Lewis 100%. Don’t hatch unless you can dispatch. ellasflock
Ahh I didn’t realise about pets4homes @Patricia W, if you don’t have a rooster already they are a really lovely addition, i 100% don’t regret keeping mine.
Patricia W
I love mine. The only time my neighbours have complained is when the first one died. They loved hearing him. So I rescued another. Unfortunately neighbours like mine are rare
ellasflock
Wow @Patricia W lucky you! It is really nice to have neighbours like that. Mine are also quite understanding, but they are also old, and deaf so they probably wouldn’t hear him anyway 🤣
