What's with the porridge?

Recommended Posts

Several of you mention giving your chooks warm porridge to warm them up either first thing or before bed - so what's in it? I'm thinking mash with hot water? Or is it something more mystical?

I'm also wondering how people ever manage to do anything when they've got chickens. So far I'm feeding them treats at lunchtime, grain in the afternoon, checking them every couple of minutes when they're free ranging. That's without the poo picking.

I have literally got nothing done since the hens arrived over 2 weeks ago. I'm a stay at home mum and the kids and husband are being neglected in favour of the hens!

Help

with milk or water?

Milk - I don't like it with water :D

Have to say I am not one for cooking stuff explicitly for the chooks, but often I will bung a piece of granary bread in warm water when it is cold - one of my bribes to get them back in the run. They seem to appreciate it - you could prob put warm water in with some pellets or mash and they'd enjoy it the same (might try that actually as they don't eat enough of their layers!)

I gave our girls some warm porridge on Friday, thinking they'd love it, but after 2 pecks, they turned their beaks up at it and walked off, showing no more interest in it!

They don't even like sweetcorn! They seem to like lettuce and brussel sprouts though. Should all chooks like porridge or have I left a vital ingredient out of it?!

I make porridge specially, I understood they shouldn't have milk, and I don't like it with water!

Add a few raisins, mine scoff it up. I only do this occasionally and only at weekends, wouldn't have time in the week! It's also a cunning trick if you are going away for the weekend - I give them a bowl of porridge just before I leave, in the hope that it will fill them up and stop them scoffing everything in the feeder too soon.

Mine like ordinary porridge, or weetabix.

I mix in some poultry spice and a few raisins and they wolf it down, especially in the cold weather.

The also like warm left over mashed potato too.

There have been complaints that we never have Bubble and Squeak or Fish Cakes anymore because the hens always get first refusal on any leftover mash.

I gave my girls porridge the other day mixxed with bio yogurt, sultanas and apple and they didnt even touch it (I wish I had eaten it myself) I didnt cook it thoigh, thought they would just like the oats raw.

Will have to try it again with cooked porridge

I did them however give them left over mashed potatos with the yogurt and their layers mash mixed in and they polished off the lot!

They do have an addiction for sultanas though, they go crazy for them, they are definatly the fav treat so far.

my lot go MAD for porridge....it causes chaos here!!

They queue at the door for it.... they only get it on cold days (its not a treat otherwise is it?!).

I make it with proper porridge oats with water and topped off with a scattering of raisins.

Its usually scoffed within minutes!

Mine live on my allottment just behind my house. Each morning I let them out of the run when I bring the dog back from her morning walk. we then race to the back door where they baccaw until they get their morning porrige fix - recently rosie dog has become jealous and now competes for their bowl of porrige and raisins - poor old girl feels miffed if she just gets a bowl of milk!!

If its cold they get porridge with milk (I read yogurt is for them so I assume Milk can't hurt they have had it for 2 years) and hot water,

They also get it if they are off their grit / shell and need calcium to boost the egg shell. I add crushed baked egg shells into it and they love it.

I only give then raisins too when hubby isn't watching, he claims they get fed better than him..... but he doesn't make me eggs on a daily basis :lol::lol::lol::lol:
