feemcg
There were 6 Fiona's in my class at school - very common! When I was pregnant with Anna I had chosen Lizzie for her name and EVERYONE turned their nose up - I was really disappointed . I met a girl at the weekend who's wee boy was called Nairn which I had picked if Anna was a boy. I also love the name Rona.
Geoid
How about....Fred! Not very common, easy to say (and spell) not embarrassing either.
Lesley
There is a Winifred and a Laverne in every class in Sheffield! ....or are they Winnie and Lavvie?
Cinnamon
I was one of about nine Sarahs in my class at secondary school and I hated it. I think something just a little out of the ordinary is better. I was one of 5 in my class! My girls have got unusual names, & I much prefer them. I think that is shows a bit of imagination That said there are some gorgeous old celtic names out there too. But then Devon, whos name is an African American male name in tradition, went to secondary school to find another blonde female Devon in her tutor group Apparantly, this girls Mum was most peeved when I named my girl Devon, as her daughter was born 2 weeks before & she thought I was copying her.In fact I had seen it in a book,as a characters name & loved it - it reminded me of sunny family holidays when I was a child Cleo,my youngest, was so named after I saw 'Carry on Cleo' when I was pregnant. When she was born she had a shock of black sticky up hair & I just thought it suited her. Hubby still managed to tell everyone her name was Chloe though Both families were upset that they have not got family names, but where do family names come from I say - from someone taking that first step in naming their child something other than the usual. Personally,I would not have liked them to have been named for someone else - they are their own people with their own very pretty names

Karen & co.
I remember out of the last 10 babies I delivered as a midwife, 7 were boys and all called Lee or Liam I had visions of them all in the same class I did feel a bit mean when the proud parents all thought it was really trendy Karen x

Strepsy
I named my eldest Amy, then realised that there are millions of Amys! The others are rarer, Eve and Fay but they get fed up that they can never find their names on anything.
theherd123
My DS1 is called Alexander! He is probably an angel. The one i taught was an unruly beast who had no manners and wasnt willing to learn any either. Mind you his parents were just the same! My ds2 is Alex and pretty much fits the bill of the 'unruly beast'. he starts school after Easter and they won't know what's hit them! Actually, I'm probably pretty much like that one's parents too! On the topic of names, my dh was really fed up of my insistence that we didn't have a 'top ten' name. He actually vetoed so many of my suggestions on the basis of 'too gay', 'too american' or 'too common' Not that there's anything wrong with being any or all of those 3 things! We ended up with Toby for ds1, and lo and behold there was another one in his Reception class and compromised on Alex for ds2 as neither of us hated it or loved another name enough to argue for it. Names that are really popular here are variations on Ellie and the like for girls (there are 3 Elises, 2 Ellies, a Millie, Mollie, Maddie and Madison in the preschool at the moment) and Ben, Connor, Ryan and William for boys. Good luck choosing a name - it may seem difficult but compared with the work that comes once the baby's arrived it's a doddle! Jo

jomaxsmith
Unless your Alex swears like a trooper and kicks you when he doesnt get his own way i doubt it very much! Actually.... he definitely does the kicking (I could have written a loooong reply on the tantrums thread earlier) and also has the knack of picking up those very quiet words you say to yourself (or Daddy says to himself ) when you hit your thumb with a hammer etc - therefore everything that went wrong in his games the other day had the response 'oh, bother...' Please let him never say these things in public Jo
Snowy
A friend's children are called Martha, Elijah and Jemimah - lovely names! Some boys names in the toddler group at the moment are: Kian, Jackson, Harrison, Joel, Dillon, Louie, Leo, Harry, Euan, Josh, Mitchell and Austin. Oh, and my Matthew! Very tame in comparison! Helly Welly
I wanted to call Abi, Tabitha or Madison but OH picked Abigail. We never did come up with a boys name, although in hindsight it would probably have been Alfie. I also think Sky is a nice name for a girl. hillfamily
My DS was always going to be Oliver - now Ollie - never any doubt DD was going to be Imogen right up until she was born......I took one look at her and thought Charlotte. When she was very little she was called Char (as Ollie couldn't say Charlotte) and then when she went to school she informed me that she wanted to be know as Charlie.......and has been ever since My late Hubbie was called Julius........his mother had a funny moment I think. When he was a few months she had a sudden thought that he might get called Julie so from that point on he was always called by his middle name - Warren. Very handy when companies used to phone.......if they asked for Julius we knew that they were cold calling as he never used his first name
