Tessa the Duchess

The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency

Did anybody else watch this last night? I really enjoyed it, the perfect thing to watch on a very cold evening. All the colours of Africa, the sun, the music, I was quite transported  They stayed fairly close to the original story I thought, acting brilliant! They are apparently starting a whole series on tv next year....can't wait.

I thought it was excellent, really well cast.

I have listened to the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of the storeies when they are on, and was a little concerned that the with-pictures version might not be as good.

It was excellent. Great acting, great stories, incredibly vibrant.

I'm really looking forward to the series next year,

Got this from the Alexander McCall Smith's newsletter. "A 13 week series is to start filming in 2008, to be shown in 2009." The problem is it is going to be a collaboration between HBO in the US and BBC in the UK. The last such collaboration I can remember was that mega expensive series called 'Rome' which was universally panned, and I couldn't watch it because of all the unnecessary violence  I can only hope they don't muck about with the series and that AMS has some input into its making

It really was. I love the escapism from the books and the old-fashioned values/different way of life.

I've only seen the beginning so far so still a fair bit to go. I can't remember the first book, but enjoyed even the bits I remembered. Quite often I get bored if I know the story and watch the film, but this was worth watching.

I loved the jokes about the typewriter  and the scene at the Go go handsome man's bar :lol:

we watched it, I wasn't sure at first as it's so different to anything I've seen before and I've not read any of the books. Her character grew on me and once I'd got used to the accents, I really started to enjoy the story. It was funny and the actors were very good. I liked the guy that played the baddie (can't remember the character's name) I thought he was extremely charismatic, must find out who he is ;)

All the characters were interesting, the secretary was hilarious!

It was quirky and just the kind of thing I like, i.e. something out of the ordinary but also well made.

Can't wait for the series next year, why do we have to wait so long!?

Agreed Poet - you NEED to read the books - they are fab 8)

I have been a fan of then for many years now, since a friend from Zim gave me the first one, & I always look forward to the next installment.

I loved the show.I thought Jill Scott was great casting - what a gorgeous looking lady of traditional size

I would have liked to have seen more of the bungling apprentices, but I am sure that will come in future episodes.

Where did that hairdresser come from - I can't remember him in the books, but he was a nice addition to the cast.

I did think that Mma Makutsi was a little OTT, & rather too pretty for the role........

It did stick fairly close to the book, which was a refreshing change & very welcome.

Terrible shame that Anthony Mingella is now not around to see the series through. The man was a genius & I cannot think of a better person to have bought this book to life.
