Porridge ...how often?

Recommended Posts

I have read the posts on the forum, and I notice some of you guys give your hens oats, warm water and grower's/layer's pellets how often can this be given as I tried my 6 girls with it today and it was like throwing a bone into a den of wolves...lol they did not stop until the dish was clean...(it was so clean I coulda put it straight back in the cupboard)... any advice on amounts and frequency would be appreciated as I've never seen hens gobble up food so quickly..

Mine get porridge every couple of weeks - am sure they could have it more often - and i give it to them more often in the winter - its just a faff to make thats all!

I don't use layers pellets in mine - its a special mix of oats, raisins, poultry spice and a bit of grit bound together with warm water! They love it!

I must be a real mug - I cook oats with water to make real porridge and feed it every day - do it in the microwave for about 5 minutes and let it cool and mix in any left over veg/potatoes etc. They saw me coming eh  But to-day as they have not been eating many pellets I made it with pellets and a slice of bread soaked in hot water to make a porridge and it all went too

I only make it on chilly mornings so their tummies have something warm inside! I make mine with 2 parts pellets to 1 part oats then soaked in warm water, so it's not chicken junk food. I can't see any reason why you can't give it to them every day if that's what you want to do.

....and what size egg Sylvie laid today and the colour of their ears and how the new ones' combs are developing.....

That's what this forum is for.....so that you can keep your non-chicken friends as er...friends, rather than people who used to be your friend but now think you are a barmy chicken bore.

I have been really sucked in and they get pellet porridge every morning. I use the powdery left overs from the day befores feeder with a few fresh pellets, sprinkle of garlic powder, grit and chicken spice. soak with slightly cooled boiled water and voila empty platter and they think its something special.

Every few days I put a few grapes, raisins or sunflower seeds on the top.

They did turn their little beaks up to having spinach on top though but they adore it scattered round the run to peck at.

Spoilt! I know!

I get called the chicken whisperer here..........
