Had a bit of an incident this morning that has shook both me and Darren up. Never experienced anything like it before.

 

On our way to work, with Stefan in the back of the car, Darren pulled up at the garage to fill up with petrol. We got in the queue behind two other cars.

 

A car pulled up behind us and was papping his horn. Not being sure if he was papping at us, and having nowhere to move to anyway, we ignored him.

 

After a few minutes of this, he reversed and pulled up to a free pump across the courtyard, got out and came over to our car shouting and swearing and waving his arms about.

 

Darren locked the doors, and we ignored him. This went on for quite a while. The cars infront of us moved forward and he went off to fill up his car, chuntering to himself.

 

Darren got out to fill up and this guy was so aggresive. He stormed off into the garage shop knocking Darren as he walked by.

 

It really was unbelievable. He never took his eyes of either of us the whole time, really intimidating D in the shop and staring at me as he came back to his car. I was worried for Strefan in the back in case he did anything stupid (the man - not Stefan!)

 

We were dumb struck by the whole thing. No idea what it was all about?

That sounds really scary... what on earth is wrong with people?? what was he expecting you to do, and whatever that is, could he not have said/asked in such a way that would be both polite and actually clear as to what his problem was??

 

It's really frightening when that happens, and especially so when kids are present... I broke down once and managed to get my car on the side of the road, and still other people (male drivers mainly, sorry guys - not generalising here, but so much for any chivalry) were shouting at me for being in the way (which I wasn't, was actually in an allowed parking space), even though I had three little girls in the car with me...

 

Being in cars does odd things to some people... they become aggressive devils who think they have a right to empty roads, fast access to anything, and a right to tell everybody what to do and not to do, even when they're not doing anything wrong... as you said, nutters!!! :evil:

Did you read about the guy who was knocked off his bike by a car Ziggy, and other cars drove around him as he was in the way? He actually died on the road side.

 

Yes, if this guy has knocked on the window and told us what the problem was it would have saved him getting so upset.

How very odd. It must have really shaken you up - I hope your heart rate is normal now.

 

Maybe he mistook Darren for someone else?

 

Probably best to try and forget about it - easier said that done I know.

 

Glad the people on the garage saw what happened though - hope they were supportive.

I find the world is generally full of very kind people. I've experienced a great deal of kindness lately, in no small part from some of the people on this forum.

 

Yes, there is the occasional person who will make you want to lose faith in human nature but thank god that kindness and decency is the norm and nastiness is the exception.

 

Some people have a inflated sense of their own importance, sounds like this guy was one of them and tried to bully you for whatever reason.

 

Personally, I wouldn't dwell on it, these thngs happen sometimes and you have more important things to think about at the moment.

The world is full of kindness, and full of 'losers', I think, but when confronted with one, we lose sight for a little while, of the existence of the other... :)

 

When this kind of stuff happens to me, I can really get angry and fume afterwards... then calm myself down by thinking there might have been something (though it doesn't justify it obviously, so not making excuses for people's nutty behaviour), that triggered the other person's behaviour but had nothing to do with me.... bit like when I snap at my kids more easily when my day's gone wrong... as I said, it doesn't excuse the behaviour, but makes me stop fuming quite so much...

not to invalidate your opinion but I find when confronted by someone whose behaviour is upsetting, I try and remember that the majority of people are kind and decent and I am extremely thankful for that.

I think those sort of people show themselves up for what they are when they create an ugly moment like that.

 

You did the right thing by not responding.

 

I find if you dont respond they have no where to go with it and they look foolish.

 

A very similar incident happened with my daughter at a petrol station and some one did try to calm the situation down but the man then tried to take his aggression out on the poor chap who came to my daughters aid. She was about 18 at the time and was terriffed. She was also in a que with nowhere to go.

 

Hope you feel better soon. Dont let it upset you as hes not worth it

It does make you mad though - I was once run off the road by some nasty sorts when I was driving home from work in Oxford (t'was on Hopcrofts Holt dual carriageway, Ziggy). I stayed in my car, locked the doors and rang the police. The damage to my car was the least of my worries at the time.

 

You'll see it in a more philosophical light later Gina.

Clare's right, you will see that it wasn't aimed at you and Darren, Gina. Just a bad tempered person on a bad day, probably. We had one the other week. We have a shared driveway as we live in a cul-de-sac and someone visiting next door had parked their car across our driveway so we couldn't get out. We're used to this happening a lot as none of the neighbours are at all considerate and we never bother to say anything but LSH had to go out and asked the chap to move his car. The chap was really stroppy and had a go at LSH saying that it was "common decency" to let people park there :shock: . What about common decency for the people who live here and have to go out occasionally :roll: . Sometimes it does feel as if the world is full of losers but fortunately they are in the minority really.
