I have tried others but have always comeback to pet plan = they usually pay out quickly as well. I have all 6 of my cats an the dog insured with them and have alway had pet insurace. You usually end up getting back what you pay in over the years and my vet woudl always go that little bit extra (specialist referrals. more blood tests etc) if he knew that you were insured. Is up to you at the end of the day but I wouldnt keep my animals without it. My youngest Mainecoon had a problem with her uterus when she was neutered recently and the insurance co paid for the whole thing - my old ginger is on tablets every day and major blood test twice a year which the insurance comapny covered. When my firs Maine Coon died suddenly, petplan paid back what I had paid for her which allowed me to go out and get my premier girl Tilly. Best of all I know I never have to worry about paying for treatment and bills mount up really quickly at vets it seems these days. Aunty e Posted May 28, 2008 Share Posted May 28, 2008 I started with Argos, very cheap, paid out very quickly too when Cleo had to be hospitalised, but not very well regarded by my vet for the lowest level of cover. I've since moved three of them onto a deal from moneysupermarket.com, because Argos doubled their premiums. I haven't had to make a claim yet, but I was happy with the cover levels, and it costs about £5 a month for Nero, and £7 for Arthur (who has been treated for fighting = higher premiums ). My main problem with pet insurance really is that it wouldn't cover the cost of any problems with the Maus related to breeding - so no cover for c-sections, or anything else kitten related, like mastitis. I am taking her to be chipped at the vets next week and will also ask him what he would recommend. Vets bills are horrific in London My present dog had never been to the vet until she was around 12 yrs old and contracted arthritis, but I once had a dog who had diabetes and her vet care nearly bankrupted us I will definitely do the right thing by Google and get her health insurance. Olly Posted May 28, 2008 Share Posted May 28, 2008 Read the small print carefully, Tessa - some insurers will not cover ongoing conditions, so for example if a cat gets diabetes or thyroid problems they will only cover it for the year in which it's diagnosed, and not afterwards. Take a look at The Motley Fool website, there's a useful article here. It's definitely worth comparing a few policies. It's a gamble, like all insurance - you can pay out premiums for years and never have a claim, or you can recoup your money with one illness or accident. I have chosen not to insure my cat, but it's a personal decision, and you have to consider whether you could handle a bill for over £1,000 if it came to it. They are my favourite breed of cat and I'd have one like a shot if I could, but hubby is allergic Regarding insurance - I saw a money programme recently which said the best thing to do was invest a sum of money equal to the cost of the animal in a high-interest savings account or ISA, plus the equivalent per month that you'd pay in premiums. That way, you've got a nest-egg built up to pay for vet's bills if necessary, but if you don't need it then obviously you've a tidy sum of money tucked away. The drawback is if she breaks her leg or needs something really expensive doing before you've built up sufficient funds, but in principle it's a good idea as most people with insurance never make a claim... She is doing really well, she was chipped at the vet's yesterday and was much admired She seems to have chosen me as her favourite person she follows me everywhere and sleeps on my bed, which to be honest can be a pain at times because if I move any bodypart she jumps on it She has explored the whole house now but the kitchen is still her default setting She can be quite destructive as she chews holes in any papers or correspondence we leave around, and she has a phobia about things being hung up neatly, when I come down in the morning all the tea towels are on the floor, if somebody has left a jumper or jacket on the back of a chair that will be on the floor too She and the dog have reached an amicable arrangement and have been sighted sleeping on the same sofa. They share a waterbowl and she stands in it with all four paws then jumps out and licks the water from her paws, very cute Every time I feed her the pouch food I ring a bell and now she will come running if I ring it, so now she has been chipped and will come when I call it is time to let her out in the garden and let the house training begin! Sarah B Posted July 29, 2008 Share Posted July 29, 2008 Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My Cleo, Maine Coon cross (she is 6) is fixated with sleeping on my bed but has developed weird habits. If I'm awake she will jump up and chirup then as I stroke will purr then jump over me to the other side, same is then repeated till she settles and 'kneads' the duvet where she thinks my arm is I know it's mean but sometimes I'm so tired and half asleep and she jumps up so I pretend I am asleep, she then jumps off the bed and goes underneath it as getting no fuss and thinks she will be squashed (when this happens I'm in the dog house when I get up)!
