buffie
Not a good day Mum and dad came over with Petra, look in my pics, we had lunch and were going to go into Mk to celebrate mums birthday and Petra collapsed. She was a lovely rescued boxer we'd all only had her wonderful company for 18 months she has now sadly died Our vets were wondeful I managed to carry her downstairs and we did all we could by getting her to the vet but we can only assume she had eaten chocolate from somewhere. her history is a sad one but she had somehow got a taste for chocolate and it was a craving she was tormented by. she must have got some recently as it is the most likely cause of death. Her poor body couldn't cope as it is a poison. Please be careful with your pets and keep chocolate out of reach. Just wanted you to know that it is as serious as this and there is little anyone can do. Please tell anyone who thinks the odd choccy biccie is ok for pets. Hellcat
Oh, Buffie. So sorry to hear that. I'm always telling people not to give choccy to the dogs, folks just don't understand how dangerous it can be. My heart goes out to you and your family, thats devastating. Martin B
We keep all chocholate out of the way of our dogs, however Jess does sometimes find some somewhere! But they are generally good doggies. So sorry to hear of your loss. ---Martin---
buffie
Thanks so much, tired off to bed. She saw us as mummy and daddy no 2 and our home was hers. It's very sad and daisie keeps looking for her as she was with her and thinks she has just gone out the front door. BBx

Lesley-Jean
So sorry to hear about Petra Buffie. It always amazes me how many dog owners don't know of the dangers of chocolate. I really feel very sad for you.

buffie
Thanks so much for all your kind words. Petra had been starved for a year as her previous owner had dementia so she didn't know how to eat properly when mum and dad had her, she came out of her shell and loved life and saw us all as a big happy family and loved staying with us. The chocolate thing was only discovered recently as she devoured a box with us when she got worried. She had tests recently and was seen to be ok but she found some at my brothers and that may have set up some problem or triggeres a huge reaction. It's really nasty and most of us are aware but it's always useful to pass this onto others who just don't know. I have posted about raisins and grapes being a poison too. Burns website has alot of info www.burns-nutrition.co.uk Anyway spoke to mum she is very sad but ok and I have contacted daisies breeder to help in a search for a boxer looking for a great home. Thanks again and off to take daisie out, makes us appreciate her even more. BBx

Guest
Oh Buffie, what a horrible thing to happen. It used to amaze me the amount of rubbish people used to try and feed Buster, who had an extremely sensitive digestive system, with the excuse 'well, he's a dog and they eat everything'. The Managing Director
really sorry about Petra ,we lost a dog recently and know how heartbreaking it is, the chocolate is bad for dogs message is getting out there but another one I only learnt recently is that lily pollen is deadly poisonous to cats, if they brush past lilies then clean the pollen off their coats they can die from kidney failure. can I ask too, raisins and grapes are they poisonous to dogs ?? Hellcat
Yes, something to do with an acid, I think! Buffie might know more about this.
buffie
Not sure why but in the US it is listed as a poison and causes kidney failure and they don't know if they may be bad for cats too. Just be careful with grapes/raisins and choc with cats and doglets. Our nice news is that Daisies mum has been given to my parents. The breeders are so very kind and offered her at no charge so that she has a good home after this her final litter due this week. Mum and dad will get her in 10 weeks and she is 4ish so lovely news after the sadness. We will take daisie and my parents down in the first week of July. Guest
Sorry to hear your news Buffy - why not put that lovely pic in the RIP - pet memorial section? Phil
The Dogmother
Buffster, thanks for pointing me to this section, which I missed I am so sorry to hear about Petra; please pass my condolences on to your parents, their house must feel so empty right now. My old lurcher was like that with chocolate, she once ate a whole box of champagne truffles, but sicked them up before they harmed her
buffie
Thanks all, and thanks Phil I've popped the pic in the memorial section. Daisie is keeping us busy but mum and dad haev the void but they can on the house sale, still trying to sell so fingers crossed and they can now think about Dora, it won't replace pet, nothing could but big hearts need to share love. Mel (& Paul)
The odd grape doesnt hurt - but not loads and loads - and I think like with chocolate some dogs are less susceptible than others. Buff, do let your mum and dad know how many of us are sending their best
