theherd123 Posted May 27, 2008 Share Posted May 27, 2008 OH & I are off to London this weekend - its his birthday surprise to see Bruce Springsteen on Saturday night He doesnt know yet! We will arrive on Sat morning at about 10.30ish and plan to go to Covent garden & Leicester Square before checking into the hotel at lunchtime ish. In the afternoon we will go for a mooch in Kensington. We are stuck with what to do on Sunday from 11 til 3 We would love do some markets but unsure if any will be open then Museums & the London Eye are out of the question in such a short space of time so any ideas Suggestions on a postcard please! Tessa the Duchess Posted May 27, 2008 Share Posted May 27, 2008 Depends on which area of London you are staying. I think Portabello Market is open on a Sunday if you are in the Kensington area. Sadly I don't think Camden Lock has re-opened yet. Petticoat Lane is a fun market, but it is in the East of London, the travelling could cut into your available time. There are loads of markets dotted all over London, I should google and see what you can find in the area you are staying in. Diana memorial in Hyde Park Art Gallery - National Portrait at Trafalgar Square, Tate Modern on South Bank, a walk across the millennium bridge from St Paul's Cathedral. have a great weekend anyway! lizinsa Posted May 27, 2008 Share Posted May 27, 2008 I'd recommend Sunday UpMarket on Brick Lane, it's nice for a wander and not as busy Spitalfields, and has a wide selection of food stalls to buy lunch! Spitalfields and Columbia Rd are also in walking distance from there. To be honest it depends where you are staying and where you're leaving from. We are on the right tube line though The train back home departs from Marlybourne Station. I have looked at the weather forecast and it looks like rain all weekend - oh the Great British weather! I'll be one of the locals advertising the council's 'excess noise' phone line by the local shops that morning! Hope you have a good time though Wherever you go you're only 10 mins from an (and ) There's loads to do in London on Sundays - most things are open really. Galleries, shops, museums, markets. Portobello Market is best on Saturdays I think, but Columbia Rd is great (Sundays only), and I think Camden Lock is still open - only a small part of it was burnt down. If its pouring then try museums, galleries, or department stores. If you're going home via Marylebone then Selfridges and John Lewis are close by. I'm lucky enough to live close enough to nip in whenever I like, but there's always something to do Covent Garden's a bit touristy but can be fun...... nip to the Transport Museum and think of Dan . I love wandering around the parks, and there are so many museums and art galleries to visit, most of them are free and great on a rainy day. And if you're into retail therapy there's shops to suit everyone. I love the South Bank, stopping off at the Eye and Tate Modern, and then just wandering watching the world go by. Boat trips are a great idea. You drive around in an amphibian vehicle and then go into the river by the M15 or somesuch spy place. There is a driver and tour guide - ours used to do the tugs and barges on the river - a real old Londoner. Very funny and interesting. theherd123 Posted June 1, 2008 Author Share Posted June 1, 2008 OH & I have had a great weekend in London and got back a few hours ago totally shattered and completely worn out! We had a great time and visited Covent Garden where we bought a wonderful chicken bib for the Bean and a very unusual loo brush There was the most fantastic veggy restaurant opposite our hotel in West Kensington - the food was amazing The highlight for the OH was the Bruce Springsteen concert on the Saturday night at the Emirites Stadium. Goonergirl - it is quite an impressive stadium i will give you that, and the staff in the reception were great to me after i had a wobbly moment after getting off the hot & over-crowded tube Standing all the way from Earls Court didnt help either! Bruce played for about 3 hours solid, he is a brilliant performer and I enjoyed the evening a lot, the OH was blown away! Today we headed over to Brick Lane market for a mooch about and on the way back to the tube went into Spittlefields Market too. Both were unique in their own ways and somewhere i would like to visit again. We then decided to call it a day and head home as by lunchtime i had 'cartoon feet' syndrome - only a size 4 but feeling like a size 12 and pounding like crazy. Swollen ankles didnt help either I cant remember when i was last in London but i forgot just how many steps there are in each and every tube station Thanks for all your suggestions and next time we visit London we hope to cross a few more off our list Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
