Yolky
chickens that look different. I know that lots of chooks don't look the same but see I have little ones so I want them to be able to tell the difference easily. I am thinking of getting three chooks instead of two, I have looked at local breeders (see question in clinic) but if I decided to get another from omlet could I be specific and ask them to pick 2 s that look as different as possible or is that being too picky
Laura & CTB
No harm in asking - I'm sure they'll do their best (or you could always spray one purple )
chucknette
Hi Yolky When I ordered my four gingernuts from Omlet, I worried that I wouldnt be able to tell them apart. When they all arrived and I first saw them they all looked the same but they were in fact all totally different! They are easy to tell apart at a glance but there would be no harm in asking. Im sure they would be only too happy to oblige.
The Dogmother
There is often quite a variation in the colours and markings of the birds they have, so it's worth asking.
stoice
You could always get them some 'bracelets' You can get either a coiled plastic type or a straight sort of tube type that clips together - you could even write their names on each leg ring in permanent pen. Try ebay... http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/__poultry%20leg%20rings_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_dmdZ2QQ_frdlpwlZ1QQ_scZ1QQ_sopZ1QQ_vcZ1?keyword=poultry+leg+rings&tt_encode=raw&crlp=601872280_225916
beach chick
bracelets for chickens??? seriously???? mine would diamante... if it helps, we thought our 2 bluebells were identical, but learnt very quickly how to tell them apart.
NClaire
I didn't get my chickens from omlet (not having an eglu ), but I have 2 goldlines which are very similar to the gingernuts - one of mine has a white 'necklace' and the other is plain (and has a bald head, but that has only latterly become a defining feature!). BeckyBoo
if it helps, we thought our 2 bluebells were identical, but learnt very quickly how to tell them apart. I was going to say the same, we thought all our "brown hens" were the same but after a few days you soon get used to them and see the differences. but ask anyway, they won't mind at all Mrs B
Mrs Frugal
I have 4 Light Sussex girls who look just the same - until you get to know them! I can identify them all from a distance now even though they are all white and black. Aphro has one wattle which has never grown. Cassie has crooked toes and is paler faced than all the others. Athene is larger and stockier than all of the others and has a wider head. Pandora has a large and very floppy comb. Close up, it's obvious which is which but even from the kitchen window, I know them all. If you end up with all the same hens, you really will be able to tell them apart once you get to know them. Look for something identifiable on one of them and give that hen a name straight away then it's pretty easy to find something on each of the other hens to help tell them all apart and the differences will get more noticeable as they grow and you get used to them. Keanie Bean
They are like children, everyone elses kind of look the same ( i'm talking babies here ), but when they are your own you can tell them apart easily. I like the idea of bracelets though, but I dont think the chooks would Sarah.x
Carol U
You can get huge variations in both gingernuts and pepperpots, so I'm sure Omlet will be happy to oblige. One of our gingernuts is quite dark red, and the other almost cream. The pepperpots range from fairly plain black to really bright and stripey. However they come, I'm sure you'll soon know them apart and love them to bits!
Lapinou
You'd be surprised how even young children can tell animals and people apart easily. There isn't a vast difference between ours - one has black tail feathers, one has paler feathers on her neck and one has nothing distinguishing about her at all really - my 3.5 yo learnt the differences straight away. ..lay a little egg for me
You'd be surprised how even young children can tell animals and people apart easily. I think its the 2 legs 4 legs thing that gives it away!

Milly
Of course, the question you will be asking very soon is: how can I tell which one laid which egg Milly
Egluntyne
I have seven gingernuts....all very different. Why not put a leg ring on one until you have memorised their characteristics?
