12 year old away on school trip for a week :(

Recommended Posts

My oldest son (12) left for a camping trip this morning.

I know I should be happy for him (and I am really) but I am terrified everytime the phone rings, I jump out of my skin. Its the first time he has stayed away this long and he only went this morning... Oh my goodness I need to get over this!

Is this normal? does it get better? I just hate it!

I know it's silly, but I would be better if the phone didn't keep going  I cant turn it off for fear that they 'would' need to call.

I went out a while back and told it all to the girls, they just buk'd at me  even they think I'm silly

He'll love it, but as he's my oldest this is new to me, last time he went for 3 days I slept with my mobile next to my bed even though the phone is there also (just incase one didn't work) *I need help!* I openly admit it..

Its horrid when they go away.

My 2 both had their first trips away when they were 10 at primary school, both for a week.

I can remember how lost I felt when they were gone :?

It does get easier though,& mine both now go on regular trips with the school, without me blubbing too much :lol:

oh that's so sweet, yes I fear that my son will probably turn his nose up at the food, he normally does! I will have to feed him up when he gets back if he does..

I just hope he remembers where everythings packed, because as I was packing with him, he was busy playing with the dogs tummy!

edited to add.. I honestly felt physically sick when I drove back from dropping him off at school this morning... I couldn't shake it for ages. I know it'll get easier, and he's probably laughing his little head off with his mates, but I wont sleep.... I know it..

I was exactly the same when my Son went away for a week for the first time. He only went to the Isle of Wight, but it may aswell have been abroad!

I felt sick with worry that he would fall off the ferry and no-one would notice. He also went on the rickety old chair lift at The Needles and he is so thin that I made him promise he would hold on tight as I thought he would slip through the bars!

All sounds laughable now, but at the time, very worrying.

As for your son not eating, mine came back saying he absolutely loved Tomato soup as that was offered at every meal and he was so hungry he ate it!

He wouldn't touch a tomato before he left!

Not even going to say try not to worry, as it is what us Mum's do best.

Try to keep busy and he will soon be home

I know how you feel!

Sophia is 11 and was away last week on a school camp from Monday morning till Friday lunchtime. Then on Saturday morning she left on a scout camp and I'll collect her on Friday. I KNOW she's having fun but of course I worry about her. She sent a txt earlier saying she wanted to come home, but when I called her to explain how difficult that is at 10pm with little brother sound asleep and 2 hours drive each way, well, she was on her way over to the other tent for home baked buns and cocoa and didn't want to come home :) I swear she's trying to wind me up!!!

So, try and relax a little, he'll be fine.

thanks, :) I have been in his room and have decided that as it looks like a tornado has hit it, I will strip it all tomorrow and make it nice for when he comes back. (this is normally his job)

My son is really thin aswell, so I hope he does eat! there's very little to him already!.. people keep promising when puberty hits he'll fill out a bit..

It's not the same ion the house, it's eerily quiet, even with my younger son still here... it's because world war three isn't breaking out every five minutes between them!

My tremor is terrible today though.. :?

edited to add, they weren't allowed to take mobiles or anything, so no news is good news they said. Still jumping when the phone rings though.

it's times like these I wish I wasn't a non drinker..

Very true about no news is good news.

If there is a problem, the school will ring. My teenage daughter went away with the school and absolutely hated it, the school were on the phone asking me to come and collect her.

Have fun clearing out the room :)

...... now I look forward to them going away for a few days :lol:

Glad it's not just me :lol: . I quite like it when ES goes away as it means YS has an easy life, not being picked on and teased! And no arguments over the computer  .

YS goes away tomorrow, potentially till next Tuesday :oops::shh: . Back for two days then away again for four  . I love him really  .

Relax!!

He will have a superb time, learn new things like, 'Mums cooking is best' and he will come home covered in mud with loads of dirty washing for you to do, and will then when pressed for an answer on how it went will reply 'it was OK':lol::lol:

That's how it went for me when I was that age anyhow :lol::lol:

My girls went away in Year 4 for 3 days (2 nights) with school and both loved it. They didn't think about home at all they were so busy with activities, then playing, chatting late at night until lights out.

Then older girl Year 6, went Mon-Fri to Norfolk outward bounds trip. She wasn't allowed to ring home either, but the parents were told to supply them with 4 self addressed postcards, and she wrote home every day (but they actually arrived they day she got home but nice touch I thought).

My 11 year old will be filming for a TV show in 4 weeks time and there is a possibility she will stay there (without us) for anything up to 2 weeks. She's really looking forward to it.

thank you ANH!, that really cheered me up!, made me nearly fall off my chair whilst snorting with laughter in a very unladylike fashion though..

Right I am off to bed, I will try to get some sleep, no calls is good, he's probably having a late snack on all the sweeties I packed for him and the boys in his tent.. well it was a treat!

I am glad you all understand how I am feeling, it makes me feel a lot better to know how I am feeling is kind of normal..

I've just seen this. I am dreading it when my daughter goes off by herself. I'm sure your son will be fine, its us mums thats not!!!

My DD went on her 1st school trip to a local farm last Thursday & that terrified me - it was only within school hours too  taking my baby 5 yr old away on a big bus. She LOVED it - the teacher even let them make as much noise as they wanted on the bus!!!

I bet he's having a whale of a time.

I think it does get easier although I'm 24 and have just been away to Barcelona for a few days and my Dad was all concerned  AND I've been on school trips, gapyears, and university :?:lol:

When I went on my 1st school trip the food was vile and I ate hardly anything, I still had a fab time whilst I was there but loved being home to eat all the food my Mum had made for my return, it certainly helped me appreciate her more, so perhaps thiis worrying will be a blessing in disguise!

DD1 went on her first residential trip in May this year, a new experience for all of us... while I handled it all better than I thought (the week flew by, I wasn't constantly worried, and my other three kept me very busy), I was very happy when it was the day and time to go to school and pick her up... the coach was on time too, which was great as for the parents who went through this last year the coach was 2 hours late coming back...

They weren't allowed to call home and did have one postcard they sent, which also arrived on the day she came back!! I had expected it to get to me on Thursday rather than Friday and was VERY disappointed when the postman didn't deliver it then... (I was actually on here moaning about how late the postman was that day... then moaning about the postcard not getting to me)... it wasn't much that I was worried, cause the teacher on the trip called school each day to confirm they were all fine, but I had really, really looked forward to hearing from her...

DD1 is quite a confident child, so I wasn't worried about her missing us too much either... she'd be so busy with her friends and is so keen on all that kind of activities that I knew she'd be ok for five days... can't quite imagine DD2 being quite as keen on being away next year though... will have to see how that goes, but I'm sure I'll worry more about her... she'll be fine, will like it, but she isn't quite as confident being away as her sister...

still the same Egluntine :) he's your son!

I had a very sleepless night, I hope I get a better one tonight :? The only slight difference of him not being here is that our morning is less hectic, with him not having to be up to catch his bus :D yougest son has found that lovely! he got extra time in bed!

I guess it's all normal, and your right lizinsa my parents worry about me even now and I am 35! if they had their way I would call them each time I drove or flew to any destination
