Recommended Posts

morning all - if this works, there should be some photos of my new set up here:

none of the chicken pics is that brilliant, they wouldnt keep still!!

EDITED to say: my next plan is to get some of that willow fencing that comes on a roll, and put it over the 2 eglu runs, so that it creates some more shade in the gap between the 2. I've noticed there's not much shade in that area of the field til about 11am, so if (IF!!) we get a good summer they might need a more shadey spot.

thank you for kind words, I keep going out and looking at it because I'm really pleased with it!! and the girls seem to be too. the 'island' of long grass in the middle is a haven for snails, and they are loving going in there, picking one out and coming out to crunch it up, shell and all.

special thanks to gamebird and I think it was layalittleegg, for all the advice they gave me about electric fencing.

charliechick - that's the field which opens off the garden - garden itself is roughly the same again!! its wonderful, but SUCH a mess. according to my motherinlaw it should only take about 5 mins a day weeding to keep on top of it (she told me this when I had 2 kids under 2.5 yrs... I've never forgiven her.)

Looks lovely Beach Chick - which bit of Kent seaside are you near to?

I keep talking to my hubby about moving next year and in my dreams it will have a garden big enough for a dedicated chicken area and some views to the sea :D Ooh set me off day dreaming again.

hi Seagazer - you are in Kent too! we are between Hythe and Dungeness, about a 30 yd walk from the sea. we've been here 10 years (London refugees) and I love it. to have the beach on your doorstep is a very rare and special thing, and I do appreciate it every day (tho not so much when it's blowing a hoolie and the sand is whipping horizontally along at 90 miles an hour and filling my shoes....)

Hi Beach Chick,

My brother lives in Hythe and my sister moved to Dymchurch last year. We bought a caravan down there so that we can visit and be diplomatic - you know not having to choose which one to stay with!!

The picture of Cookie was taken on Dymchurch beach last year.

I will continue to wear my hubby down.... :D

Meringue is a copper black maran joojoo, now about 22 weeks. she is rather elegant, and VERY laid back! she should be the next to start laying, as her 'sister' (white leghorn) the same age has been laying for a good couple of weeks. however, the breeder said marans were slower to mature, and judging by her tiny comb we've got a wait awhile yet...

thank you chelsea - and seagazer, Dymchurch is MY beach! if you know it, we are between the village itself and the martello tower you pass on the way in to the village... near the field which used to have the 'children's paradise' sign!

No really - we must walk past yours whenever we're down there. We walk from 'whispers New Beach' into Dymchurch along the sea wall.

I will have a good look out next time - its funny we often pick out houses and gardens that we like as we walk along
