Eglus vs Cubes - fors and againsts!

Recommended Posts

We have both as I would like some more girls. They seem to be addictive

We wondered whether to get another eglu or a cube, decided on a cube, at the moment it sits empty waiting for OH to find time to build a walk in run. It doesn't have the charm of the eglu, I think the space inside is good, not sure about the ladder and although built by the Omlet man it doesn't seem to fit together as well as the eglu. On a positive it doesn't seem to leak.

It is a hard decision to make, still not sure if we have made the right one or not, time will tell :?

I have only had my cube a couple of weeks and am still waiting for Andyman to finish the new run.

I haven't experienced any leaking as yet even when we have had some quite heavy rain.

Although the girls have not moved in Cynthia and Rae both lay their eggs in it if they are out and about at that time. :D

I was a bit worried about Pepper getting in the cube as she is a huge girl and getting on a bit so her legs aren't great but I have found her in it a couple of times now.

Can't really say about pros and cons of cleaning compared to the eglu yet, but I really wanted the space the cube offered.

I have to say that I haven't decided yet which is my favourite but I know I'm going to be very sad when I get rid of the eglu. :(

Everyone who says they hate the Cube is answering on their own behalf rather than that of the hens.

My hens don't get out much, and the Cube is so much better for them: light, roomy, and airy run, with scope to jump.

If you grow long grasses around the run it can look very nice. You need planting that comes up to the height of the Cube.

And the Eglu and run are much more vulnerable to foxes and rats than the Cube.

The Eglu is brilliant for chicks, but I no longer think it is big enough for full-grown hens.

Two more questions folks...

I use the chicken tractor system, moving the eglu around every week on grass. Can I do the same with a cube?

I recently had to ship the girls off to a chicken sitter for two weeks, and erect our eglu when we got there. Is this not possible with the cube?

Many thanks. :D

If you have a large area of grass, you can move the Cube around, as it has wheels. But if space is tight, it's not really possible. The wheels don't swivel, and it is very heavy.

And it is a big job taking it all apart and putting it together again -- I don't think anyone would recommend that.

The happiest solution is to have one of each. The eglu is so handy for emergencies, breeding chicks, and holidays.

I had an Eglu for 10 months and then swapped it for a Cube in March 2008.

My Cube is one of the "leaking" Cubes which I have posted about on numerous occasions :wall: .

I've had a replacement Roof & a replacement Side Panel. The original delivery and the replacement delivery were assembled by Omlet (not myself) and both times my Cube continued to leak. Around June 2008 I received a "Retro Leak Kit" which also has made little difference to the "Leaking" problem.

Every time I remove the Back panel of my Cube during cleaning I use Masking Tape to divert the Leak from the Roosting Box.

I stopped posting about this problem months ago, Pointless :wall:

The response being "Try phoning Omlet and telling them" (I'd never thought of that)

or "It's only a few Cubes that leak" !!!! (A poll at the time showed almost 1 in 3 Cubes leaked).

My own theory is this, the Retro Kits were despatched at the same time as the weather improved (May-June). Most complaints were posted during April (heavy shower season).

Wait band see what happens in the Autumn/Winter months to find out how effective the Retro Kit is.

If anyone asks me about the Cube I say it's really easy to clean, Loads of room for the Chickens (I have 7 in mine), But I paid around £800 for it and it leaks.

Your Choice

clash

That is really annoying. I would just make them replace the whole thing if it leaks; for £800, that is simply not good enough. I need to make a decision. Based on what I've read, it sounds like a bit of a gamble; some people are thrilled, others aren't. I'm the 'unlucky' sort who will most likely end up with a leaky one, you can be sure. If that happens, they can just take it all back I'm afraid. I'll order a couple of gingers so they'll have to put it up for me too. I've heard people complaining about missiing parts.

if you have plenty of room in your garden you should be able to move your cube, it is heavy and cumbersome though so you might need some help.

We do transport our eglu over to my sisters when we go on holiday with ease, we have never tried with the cube, I dare say it is possible - but it will take up a lot of room in the car (might have to do 2 trips), and dismantling will take more time. :)

disagree im afraid :) . I dont think my hens are worried what they stay in, we had 2 eglus between 4 hens in a walk in run before and happy for 18months and now we have the cube. They dont like the ladder and havent used it since day one, they never share the nestbox either (even though there is room  ) and nor the superglug so those aspects of design of the cube are wasted on my girls.

I was giving my opinion of the cube and how it suits us as a whole, everyone's situation is different - it suits you as it gives your girls more room as they dont get to free range much, we are fortunate my girls do free range most of the time.

My hens are spoilt rotten, and I dont think they'd mind me saying (seeing as we pay for their luxury lifestyle  ) that we do not like the cube.

Of course there are lots of happy customers who do love their cube.

Clash I have the retro kit in my cube & it works fine, but my cube leaks though the eggport :(

The problem has been notified to Omlet who so far have sent me a new eggport door- still leaks, & a brand new side ( without an eggport door in it) which we have fitted & it still leaks.

I have asked Omlet to send me out a new side & an eggport which they have tested beforehand to ensure that it doesn't leak- I'm waiting for a reply on that one.

Quick warning to anyone with a Flytesofancy walk in run who wants to keep the cube in the run itself. The cube does not fit through the door, even sideways. This is not Omlet's fault - their measurements are correct but Flytesofancy's are not and the cube is an inch or so too big.

We have our cube on the outside of the walk-in run. We used to have two eglus in a permanent position and i loved them. However, i wanted one house to clean so we got a cube. Now, i love the cube. I find it easy to take apart for cleaning. I simply roll the roof forward, take off the back door, remove the bars and poop trays and jet wash everything. I don't bother completely removing the roof, i can easily clean it in situ. Mine leaked once but i've had no problems with it since and haven't bothered to fit the retro kit. Yes, it hasn't got the innovative shape of the eglu, but the fact that i don't have to bend down to clean it or check for eggs makes a massive difference to me.

As for the chooks, they are fine. They got used to the ladder and now like to line up on it ready for bed. No one sleeps in the nest box anymore, i did take the divider out pretty much straight away. They have much more room ( we have 7) and there seem to be less arguments about who will sleep where.

I understand that we have been lucky and not had problems. Although, when the cue arrived, two of the screw holes didn't have the metal thread in but luckily my OH is pretty handy so it didn't bother us. I'm disabled now so would never switch back to an eglu as i can't bend down.

I hope you love the cube too!!

Sounds promising. I can't wait, I'm really excited. :dance::dance::dance:

We had an eglu for 3 months and then upgraded to a cube with extension a few weeks ago - I much prefer the cube mainly because it is more spacious, off the ground and the height of the run.

It only took a couple of days for the chooks to master the ladder. We also get our eggs much earlier as they lay together!

Because of the height of the cube I have found it much easier to integrate it into the garden - ie able to plant shrubs alongside it to break it up and as we only have a smallish garden, this was quite an important factor.

I did like the eglu, however the cube has blended much much better into the garden.......oh and ours doesn't leak!! :D

Gosh, I've been whining for months about the cube not being available in the US :boohoo: But after reading through these posts, I'm not sure I'm at all interested anymore. Maybe a couple more Eglus are in order. Now, if they would bring the yellow back, I could get a red and yellow (I already have orange) and make a sunshine. :D

**Edited to add: I just visited the sticky regarding the cube when it was first released. I had the opportunity to see pictures of all the bits and bobs on the Cube as it was being put together. Thanks to all you first cube owners (you know who you are) :D for the pictures. I can see clearly in the first few pictures that there are gaps in the cube, but it was also pointed out in the very beginning that they were to be expected. Only problem I can see is.....I'm back to where I started. When will it be available?!?!? :boohoo:

Hi

I had a set up the same as yours (conveter + extention) and found it was hard to poo pick and so I wondered about trading in my eglu for a cube (this was while it was under the 30 day guarantee) but all the posts about leaks, gaps etc really put me off. They are very expensive and for that money I would expect it to be perfect. So we decided to make our own walk in run (heres some pics viewtopic.php?f=5&t=30900 ) and I am so glad we did this. The chooks have loads of room when they have to stay in and as it is walk in it is soooooo easy to clean/poo pick. It cost us to make less than the extra it would have been to buy the cube with at least one extention if we had traded in. We also now have a 4m x 2m run which could hold far more chooks than the run which is attatched to the cube.

Hi Yolky

Can I ask please? What have you lined the base of your floor with/

many thanks

Kit
