The Dogmother
We got a leaflet through our door the other week, and I finally got round to looking at it - look what we can get for cheap... http://www.getcomposting.com/oxon/index2.htm. There's a link to see what is available in other areas too.
Guest
You are really lucky Clare We don't get anything at all from our council and I think we pay one of the highest council taxes.
theherd123
Debs go to your own council website and take a look under 'waste & recycling' they usually have offers there. We recently bought a water butt and drain pipe converter kit, 3 composters and 2 kitchen caddies for less than £45! B&Q want to charge you £30 just for the water butt!!! So Claret whats on your shopping list??
Cinnamon
Thanks for that Clare. I come under OCC,so I may get the water Butt, which looks like a bargain
Mrs Frugal
Couldn't see any offers from my council . They don't give away anything round here .
kannie
We got 2 compost bins (similar to those in your offer, Claret), for £5 each! Also got one of those little kitchen caddys and the compostable bags! Wish our council did cheap water butts... maybe I should write to them... Guest
Our council give away nothing and the website is rubbish I contacted them about recycling plastics and they told me to take it to the council tip as there was recycling bin there. When we took it, the men there knew nothing about this so called 'plastic recycling bin' and told us to put it in the landfill skip I try to buy as little plastic as possible, but it is inevitable that you end up buying some On a less ranting note, I know our water company have offers on cheap water butts and composters
kannie
On a less ranting note, I know our water company have offers on cheap water butts and composters I've just checked and ours does too, and our council! Need to compare offers & make plans!
The Dogmother
If you go to the link that I posted and take out the 'oxon' part and put your own county in there i.e. I did it for my folks and put 'herts' in instead, then you might just get your offers, alternatively call the number on the top of the webpage. Debs, that is scandalous - bring all your plastic down to me when you're passing - I'll recycle it for you! Seriously, I would call the council about it - there was a big song and dance here when they started recycling and they get whacking grants for doing it, so it's very poor that they won't recycle everything in your area I was going to get one of the compost bins - but when I measured it out, they are ENORMOUS and i only have a small garden, so I might just be getting a smaller one from the garden centre instead. I'd like a larger one, but there's nowhere to put it!
PurpleHen
I have just checked the site out, we seem to have more choice than you (for instance a smaller composter - 220 litres) - however we have to pay more We get a £5 delivery charge and to compare the larger composter, we get charged £17.95 - whereas you are only charged £6........ The Dogmother
That sounds like the site for my folks in Herts Jackie. Odd isn't it? Some areas also seem to have garden centres where the products are sold at those reduced prices, personally I would prefer that option as I'm at work during the day, so deliveries are difficult. Lesley
Living close to the Oxfordshire border, we take our recycling to a tip there. It is actually closer than the Stratford one and has better recycling facilities. Stratford has a Hospice shop which is brilliant though. There are surprising differences between the different authorities
Neil & Steph
Debs We live in West midlands and got our composter for an ill fish ( - six quid - sorry folks I couldn't resist as it's on very rare occasions I get to use that joke) though blackwall. We were able to get it from an offer with Severn Trent water (don't know who supplies your H2O) so it's not just Councils which provide them. The offer was in the magazine we got with our last quarterly bill. You might want to give them a call orcheck it out ( http://www.s"Ooops, word censored!"er.co.uk/server.php?show=ConMediaFile.861 or To order ring Tel: 0870 849 4851 quoting reference SEV20C - it doesn't say it's limited to ST customers. I don't know if this link works, but it's the actual magazine http://www.s"Ooops, word censored!"er.co.uk/upload/pdf/source_unmetered_final.pdf - see page
The Dogmother
I just had a look at the Thames Water site (our provider) in case they had any offers, and waddya know..... all that money and they can't manage to offer any cheap water butts
Neil & Steph
Claret - Have you tried this site - pop in your postcode http://www.recyclenow.com/home_composting/in_your_area/in_your_area.html let me know how you get on. Steph
Neil & Steph
Claret - Sorry on closer inspection I finally noticed it was a water butt not a composer you were after - still it may be a useful website for others out there.
Cate in NZ
Thanks for that link Clare. I did as you suggested and substituted kent for oxon in the address, and got some good offers. Compost bins for £10 if you have them delivered, or £6 if you collect them from a garden centre, although I've got 4 already, don't need another yet. But the also do wormery's, which I'm far more tempted by.... an unbranded but looks ok wormery for £49.95, or a Can-O-Worms for £79.95. I might be investing in some worms pretty soon then
Guest
Thanks Neil & Steph We are ST Water and I had seen the water butt offer We haven't got round to getting one yet, they are in very short supply apparently. I would really like to have all our 'grey' water diverted and maybe that could be our next project PS just read this on the BBC website http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hereford/worcs/5127334.stm
The Dogmother
Claret - Have you tried this site - pop in your postcode http://www.recyclenow.com/home_composting/in_your_area/in_your_area.html let me know how you get on. Steph Thanks for that Steph - it turned up the same site and offers as the local council one - now why couldn't they have links to that from the Thames water site? I tried the search facility and everything I need to get a couple of the slimline butts that Buffie got from the Harrod Horticultural site - space is at a premium, but I can link these together and divert the water from the main roof too then. Mrs Frugal
My Mum's council have the composting bins I've just bought to have in the kitchen at a fraction of the price as well as Bokashi and bins so I'm going to ask her to order me another composting bin and a good supply of Bokashi! Why doesn't my council do it too! We're only 15 miles away !
The Dogmother
Oooo, cheap Bokashi - can we all move in with your Mum Kate? Thanks Christine - I did a search on their site and came up with zilch
kannie
How big are they Kate - is it very bulky? Our kitchen is very small
Mrs Frugal
About as big as an average pedal bin. Not huge at all. I'm really pleased with mine as my kitchen is tiny and it doesn't get in the way.
AnnieP
What council does your Mum live in Kate? I'm hoping it might be one where we know someone who'd order on our behalf.....
