panic attacks, advice pls

Recommended Posts

Having seen it done, I think I'd like to host a course, anyone know how I go about it? :D

Do Omlet cover personal accident insurance etc, just in case someone trips over in your garden, that sort of thing?

Click on the 'courses' tab at the top, on the left is a link to 'host your own' which tells you how to go about it :D

Omlet don't provide insurance, you would have to provide your own.

Excellent! So glad you made it AND it sounds like you had a great time. (It also sounds like you have the same sense of direction as me, once took me an hour and a half to get to Chessington Zoo from my house - it's about 20 minutes away and I even knew where it was, just completely lost the ability to work out how to get there!! ) My Mum still never lets me forget that one :D

Well done missus :clap::clap::clap::clap:

thanks everyone. I hope one day I can do it without a safety net but it's a move in the right direction. I really appreciate the support and advice, it's a difficut thing to admit that you're scared about something some people might see as trivial.

It's not the going out alone that scares me but going out alone with the fear of having an attack. As those of you who have experienced it, your heart beats so fast you feel you're going to pass out and I don't want to pass out when I'm alone. That's what scares me, and with my medical history on top of that it just compounds the fear.

I'll check out all the links and resources you've given me and I'll keep trying. Karen, I'll have to try and come and see that patio by myself!

Thanks again, you don't know how much you've all helped me today ;) xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Well done Poet. Like so many others here, I also suffer from panic attacks and have turned down work because I couldn't face the prospect of travelling on my own. Every time you overcome your fears you are taking a step towards recovery. Even if you do have a panic attack while out and about you have to congratulate yourself that it did not stop you from going out and doing what you wanted. I'm sure it is the extreme stress that triggers these things and generally the panic attacks do decrease in frequency over time, eventually disappearing.

Whenever I get an attack I keep reminding myself that it is only a panic attack and that it won't do me any harm and I also keep repeating the mantra that my psychologist told me: "Feel the fear but do it anyway"

Good luck with your continued progress

Brilliant Justine! :D Well done you.:clap::clap:

I'm a bit like Cinnamon. Not as bad as you both, but I do get very nervous about going somewhere I know I have to be. I get a bit IBS-obsessed and have to make sure I know there are loos on the way and at the other end, just in case. I'm a great believer in Bach's Rescue Remedy too. It seems to help me, but I don't know whether that's the placebo effect or not. I never used to suffer with such nervousness, but seem to have got worse as I hit the menopause.

Glad you made the Omlet course, despite the detours. I've been considering holding a hen party for months, but because of the above problem, am a bit nervous to set a date.

*hugs*

Well done Poet. You actually faced the first and greatest hurdle. Now you have this achievement under your belt you will never be in the same position again - ie. you have faced your fear and done it anyway and know that it's possible. We don't underestimate how big a decision this was for you. You can be rightly proud of yourself.

Now, how about drawing up a hierarchy of easier to more difficult situations to tackle one by one? It is said at the end of the day that "all we have to fear is fear itself" - and this is often the case. We fear the experience of fear rather than the situation.

Well done

The best way to deal with this kind of anxiety is to face it head on one step at a time.

I have always been a fairly neurotic person, I would feel really sick and be unable to eat if I had to travel anywhere. The day that I took my driving test was a turning point, I was so tempted to jump out of the car and just run away, but I didn't and that boosted my confidence no end. I don't like unfamiliar things but because I have had to take the children to various places over the years I am a lot better.

My ED went through an awful patch around this time last year, she couldn't even sit through a 30 minute lesson at school without having a wobble and leaving the classroom to go to the toilet. I have stood at the bus stop with her when she is meeting friends in town with her begging me to let her go home even though she knows that she will have a great time when she is there. I have felt like the wicked witch of the west each time but I know from my own experience that you have to stretch yourself bit by bit or your world can shrink around you.

She successfully went on a school trip to EuroDisney in July, she had a great time and she is so much better now. We still have to know where the nearest toilet is all the time though to keep her happy.

thanks everyone. It's amazing how many people have experienced or still are experiencing similar symptoms to me. It's actually helpful and reassuring to know I'm not so alone, although I do hope you manage to conquer your fears too! xxxx

Karen!!!! Just pour a little bit of champagne on the patio, we'll drink the rest!!!! I'll have to get Ian to drive! Defeats the object but what the heck! ;)

Well done Poet :D

Was it Church Lane that was closed to traffic? It's murder going to work at the mo because of that road closure, the traffic is abysmal

You were only a couple of miles away from me last weekend- would you like to pop in sometime when you are next in the area for some lemon drizzle cake?

Go girl :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

yes!!!! I ended up on a dual carriageway, went past McDonalds and round a mini roundabout but took the wrong turning off the roundabout and went past some brand new flats???? Got there in the end though :D

Call in anytime :D

The dual carriageway you were on was the infamous East Lancs Road

Church Lane has been shut since the midle of July, supposedly for 8 weeks :lol:

I'll PM you soon :D

If it's been closed that long then you'd think the AA route planner would have known, fancy sending me down a closed road, stupid thing!!!

Hi there :D

How did it go? I can totally sympathise you as I've suffere panic attacks in the past and didn't have a clue what was happening to me  I found it really scary when it was happening in the car, and would get what I describe as tunnel vision and my legs would go to jelly. I was going through a stressful period at the time.

I got through it with cognitive behavioral therapy, and was given a relaxation cd, I found Paul Mckenna to be better. Your mind is a powerful tool and will cause many symtoms in the body that you would't imagine. Once I understood what was happening it made it easier to get over it.

There are some tips that were given to me, i'm not sure if you've been told these..

Eat regularly as the feeling anxiety gives you is a similar one to when your body is hungry

Don't drink too much alcohol.. it raises the cortizol (not sure if thats how its spelt) levels in your body, and enhances the 'fight or flight' reaction

Exercise regularly, as the excess adrenaline in your body will be burned up

Take time out to relax, lie in a dark room with the relaxation cd on, maybe try yoga?

I really do understand that this is horrible, and for anyone who hasn't suffered from it, you are really lucky :D

When I felt it happening I would tell myself to stop it, and managed to stop it mid attack, which made me feel in control. I have got over it almost completely through exercising, but it does happen every now and again, but not as bad as it used to be. I can now drive, but take it steady and pull over if I need to.

I hope this helps, If you can get the CBT then it will open your eyes, and eventually make you feel in control

Virtual hugs, Donna xx

Poet, just caught up on this thread and I want to say congratulations for having the courage to go to Nikki's course. Anyone suffering from an anxiety disorder will appreciate just how much this 11 mile drive means to you. I was going to suggest a MedAlert bracelet or necklace but I see someone has already suggested this. Excellent thing to have for anyone suffereing from a condition like yours that means you could not communicate to paramedics. Should help ease the anxiety.

You've overcome a huge hurdle, it's important that you keep going and you can only get stronger.:clap::clap::clap: Don't forget you're not alone, there are loads of omleteers out here that empathise and it sounds like there are some really great ones living near you that are very supportive. Deep breaths and one challenge at a time!
