I guess it's just a scaled up version at the end of the day - newborns wobble!! THink of baby giraffes when born -you wonder how on earth they make it onto their feet. Yet if they don't then they are fair game. THat lamb is huge. I was really surprised at the difference in size between the two breeds of sheep - clearly not a country girl I think you need to organise an Omlet meet at yours so we can all visit the lambs Only joking. (although my feet really hurt as the ground is like concrete ) I was talking to a retired farmer yesterday - she said it is as tiring to look after 6 as it is to look after 60 We've gone from a fairly quiet time over winter to having all these babies to feed and water, a polytunnel full of seedlings and a 23 ton pile of topsoil which my son has kindly distributed into a big new plot, as well as all the existing veggie plots.. We've got new hens who don't all get on as well - but, we're getting there I've managed to get Carl to work more from home for a couple of weeks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Lesley Posted April 24, 2009 Author Share Posted April 24, 2009 With hindsight, I wish I'd chosen black tags I ordered them at the same time as I was setting up the stationery for the farm - and that has a green theme I like the photo of Carl - and it shows the road and our nearest neighbour, we couldn't see that view before but they've pollarded all the trees in the next field. At least Ruby has her eyes open - Jazz couldn't manage that for the rest of the evening - she'd been out and running around with Jake before you came. At least it meant you had a rest! I do like the green ear tags I must admit, it also means that they're easier to see on the ones with black ears if they fall off! Lesley Posted April 26, 2009 Author Share Posted April 26, 2009 ......and.......we have number 4 The ewe who isn't due until last - Monday 4th May - stayed in the barn this morning. We checked on her just before the Grand Prix.......nothing doing........decided to check on her at the end of the GP as we were going to collect Son, his g/f and her mother and go for a stroll locally. There we were - all shiny and scrubbed......best clothes on.......had one last look....and there she was a tiny cream and brown lamb! Just a few minutes old! We got changed and went out to get them both into a pen and then decided that she didn't want us there - particularly if she was having another lamb - so we went out for an hour. She hasn't had another - just the one tiny girl She wasn't a good mother last year and her lamb died so we're going to keep an eye on her for a day or two. Now they go in and check when they think they're finished At the sheep farm they have them scanned, the man is amazing and can do it in seconds! SIL tried to convince me to slip a couple in the car as we left, I can just imagine the reaction of my 3 labs....and my mum would have me certified DH did make a comment today about getting a smallholding in Wales - I think he was joking, but can't always tell, even after 20 years together !! Now they go in and check when they think they're finished At the sheep farm they have them scanned, the man is amazing and can do it in seconds! I'd better go and have a look! I usually go out at 6.30 but it was raining heavily so I used the binoculars..........who knows what may be hiding in the straw!! .....and then, I'll send Carl in.....with a long orange glove! At the sheep farm (it all sounds confusing!) when we're doing work experience, we sometimes check just in case, and it shows what an 'empty' ewe feels like, and if there if ever a problem lamb, we feel what it is like and sometimes lamb them.
